I want to buy a gaming PC for around a grand. I know Alienware has become nothing more than a name that is stupidly expensive. Any suggestions? I'm looking for a SLI vid card system with at least 2gb of video ram. I can't be bothered with building the system myself, I want it pre-frab and good to go the day it's delivered.

Any suggestion?

Skip alienware as a choice. Ever since Dell bought it the quality has gone to the dumpster. What you would get is an overpriced POS using Dells cheap parts.

For a desktop it's best to build your own these days. Have Kao set you up with a recipe for a nice machine in your price range.

Would probably be a better choice for this thread.

If you're running Windows 7, you should probably go for at least 6 gigs of RAM. I'm not sure if it's just the Ultimate, but before I upgraded to 16gb, 7 was running at a constant 1.5gb out of my 4.

This will end well. Welcome back by the way Rime. How's Minnesnowda treating you? Or Bahrain I guess since I see you're still in the Navy.

No, that's just the way Windows 7 is. It optimises RAM performance in a way that previous versions don't. It tries not to waste it. If you start gaming it'll shift those ****** processes no one cares about to virtual memory.

Though, I have to say, it doesn't use 1.5 gb unless you're actually, you know, doing something. If that was its resting state from your perspective you must've had a lot of background processes. Mine's running at 1.4 gb right now and I have an enormous amount of **** going on.

i7 2600k is faster than an i7 960 for $15 more. It only has 16 PCIE lanes but they are twice as fast as the 1156 and 1366's PCIE lanes so there's little difference between 2x16 on 1366 and 2x8 on 1155. It also has "only" dual channel memory but even on the LGA1156 i7's that didn't make much difference on quad core CPUs.

LGA1366 is a dead man walking. The higher end of Intel's "midrange" LGA1155 socket has surpassed it and later this yeah it's replacement, LGA2011 is coming out with quad channel memory and 40 PCIE lanes allowing 3x16 Crossfire/SLI.

Also, "low latency" and "high speed" memory isn't worth the money on Intel CPUs. The difference between 7-8-7-24 1600mhz memory and 9-9-9-24 1333mhz memory is 1% or less. Quad core i7's just don't need that much memory bandwidth. Just stick with standard timings and whatever the standard memory speed your board calls for. Buying expensive high speed memory (which is actually overclocking memory because anything higher than 1066mhz on LGA1366 and 1333mhz on LGA1156 and LGA1155 is faster than what they are designed for) is just wasting your money.

Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:

I'm not up to speed any more on computer hardware, but as far as I can tell, you want a minimum of a dual core computer if you want to handle any of the latest games... including old MMOs that have had updates/expansions.

Also, find the beastiest video card you can afford.

Now you pretty much want 4 cores minimum.
