My husband and I and our friend have decided to cancel our Japan trip. We're not really worried about radiation or anything, but I can't imagine walking around, doing the tourist thing while they're trying to recover from such a horrible disaster. Maybe in a year or two we can try again.
So we decided to go back to Ireland instead.

Still awesome (and I'm envious), irregardless of what country you're visiting.
I've heard good things from people about visiting Japan, but yeah, I totally understand why you'd be hesitant to take a trip while they're recovering. It'd just feel kinda off.

Totally understandable. I'd be loathe to tour a country while they're trying to recover for the same reason. But hey, maybe we'll end up seeing Japan at the same time. The girlfriend and I intend to do Japan for our honeymoon.

I'm not very strong on pure economics. So it is really hard for me to know what would be economically beneficial for Japan right now. (I believe individual actions add up massively one way or another, thus a small action financially or physically can be part of a cumulative huge step in the right or the wrong direction).
Although I don't spend a lot on media, I'm considering buying a Japanese album by a rock band Kirby found. I usually by albums in CD format, because I swear to God I can hear the difference in lower resolution MP3 recordings (they sound muddier to me). But I'm having perhaps a totally irrational "ick" feeling that any hardware shipped from Japan might have been exposed to more than background radiation. Perhaps I could find something originating from Japan in iTunes.

Being in the Southern Hemisphere, and given the surprisingly low level of atmospheric mixing between the two hemispheres, I am actually eating slightly less radioactive food than you are.

Go to Japan. They need the money you will spend. The issue is far enough away to not worry about it.

Hmm, Japan needs money from outside. But as of a few weeks ago, they were desperately short on electricity. Foreigners were encouraged to leave Tokyo and other cities, not because they were in danger from radiation, but because there were rolling blackouts and brownouts, the freshness of food, the supply of sanitation and enough heat could not be relied on.
Although service suppliers like restaurants must be in dire trouble from lack of tourists, Japan as a whole probably needs less people THERE, but would welcome higher exports sold to foreigners.

If you go to the general Cork area you should take a day to visit Kinsale. Lots of restaurants and pubs. The bay is nice too.
Ireland is a lovely place, really. So long as you don't venture near the boarder with Ulster, I suppose. The people are friendly and the beer is good.

Sorry, Ari, I got bogged down at work.
I can't explain why, but since I was younger I've wanted to visit Ireland. The pictures I'd seen were gorgeous, and I'd heard lovely things about the people and the food. Visiting a year and a half ago, even in the freezing weather, they were right. It's a beautiful place, and the people are all so nice. The food was amazing. We had a blast doing the literary pub crawl and visiting the castles, there was just nothing I didn't love. And I'm am incredily excited to go back in the spring when the weather is a little warmer and visit the cliffs!!
I can't explain why, but since I was younger I've wanted to visit Ireland. The pictures I'd seen were gorgeous, and I'd heard lovely things about the people and the food. Visiting a year and a half ago, even in the freezing weather, they were right. It's a beautiful place, and the people are all so nice. The food was amazing.
