Recently a documentary involving the "Mothman" appeared on Netflix. I remember there being a movie about it a long time ago with Richard Gere and being vaguely interested in the story.

So anyway, I viewed about half of "Eyes of the Mothman" before getting bored of interviews with typical West Virginians and excessive filler involving some things that really have nothing at all to do with the Mothman.

I did a bit of reading and I'm beginning to believe that there was definitely "something" up there scaring the bejuses out of those poor people. I highly doubt it was a sand-hill crane, or a weather balloon... It kind of reminds me of an episode of Scooby Doo... just a guy in a mask flying around scaring people for some inane reason or another. The only problem with that idea is the "flying" part.

More interesting than whether or not the Mothman was a demon, extra-terrestrial, mutant owl, or an elaborate lie made up by an entire town full of people, is the fact that something crazy like that could happen to anybody, any time, and nobody would ever know about it, because it's simply too hard to believe, and there is no way to actually prove it-- even with 100+ eyewitnesses.

I mean... I could have dinner in a public restaurant with Sonic the Hedgehog in front of dozens of people and it wouldn't matter because everyone would assume he was just a dwarf in an expensive costume.

What could humanity do if Mothman really was something we didn't already know about? We are so ready deny the possibility of the unknown, in place of sometimes less probable explanations just because they sound more realistic. Aliens could touch down all over the world today, walk right up to us and slap 20 million of us in the face, and we'd never know. We'd just assume it was some kind of collective hallucination caused by escaping gasses within the Earth, and every "reasonable" person who was not slapped would believe that, the 20 million+ witnesses would all be deemed crazy and stupid, and the world would move on as though nothing had happened.

Depends on the consequences, right? As something gets more serious and widespread, people will be more willing to consider crazy theories in the absence of a logical explanation. You see that idea a bit in some of the minor hysteria that say, a new disease can cause.

Once all these extraterrestrials and monsters start wreaking havoc on the populace, and not making patterns in corn or saying "boo" to rednecks, then I bet you that a few more people will take notice. Smiley: tongue

"The Fourth Kind" with Milla Jovovich is a pretty spooky watch, even if you don't believe in alien abductions.

Do you mean your twin's friend or your friend's twin? And does it mean that the other twin is a butterfly?

Yeah, no way I'd watch that one. Probably wouldn't be able to sleep for a year.'

Edit: On the topic of the mothman... The same day I watched the movie you mentioned, I drew "walk down alone into the cave and turn off all the lights behind you" duty at work(I worked at a national park that is a cave that summer). I was freaked out for the entire trip down, afraid I would turn around and see something behind me.

And here I was wondering what a "fursona" is.

I'm afraid to google it...

I liked The Fourth Kind, but the "real" footage was all bologna, which was disappointing. I actually internet-sleuthed around and found the actress who plays the "real" psychologist lady. Disappoint.

Well goodness me, I actually am amazed at how good a job she did of presenting as an UTTERLY trashed person.

Fursona: an alternate persona that is an animal of some sort. A classic Fursona type is a person with an alternate persona of a wolf, or a dog.

The spectrum of "Furries" runs from people who just particularly like a type of animal, and like to imagine being that type of animal on a semi regular basis (kind of like adults who stick with the "I'm a horsy!" phase of some little children's growth), through to Furries who like to arts-and-crafts their Fursona by drawing pictures of the alternate self, collect memorabilia about that type of animal etc, through to Furries who role-play as that animal for recreation, through to the extreme set of Furries who like to kink up their sex lives by having sex while dressed up as, or role-playing as, or imagining being their alternate animal persona.

Edit: oh rats I'm in the OOT with sex-ed again. MOVE THREAD!

Regional legends can be plenty to people of the area. Real or not people seem to have a say. Things like the Jersey Devil or the Yeti or chupacabra will always be around.

The OOT was ruined well before Alma came around.

I'd say watch the newspapers, a lethal balloon accident aught to get some space in the papers, maybe even on the news!
