Heh, we got a pretty good scare letter involving the whole Hurt Locker torrent thing where our ISP was subpoenaed by the producer to get our real info. That seems a little more serious and Im interested to see if anything comes of it. Also interested to know how they can charge a person with anything. Since there is really no saying who was using my router to DL it.
technically if you own it it is your responsibility to secure it. If you don't, I'm pretty sure any illegal going-ons are on your head.

I also believe this is the case, and would probably hold up if they took you to court.

Im not so sure. I could have it plenty secure but there's still X number of people in the house using the internet.

My name is the one the ISP has, but i didnt DL it.

If it's copyrighted material, yes.

And I already own two copies?

Then download it from the source as previously mentioned.

Claiming that you didn't know isn't a plausible defense.

How so? I didn't know you could download it from their website until after I made this thread and people mentioned it thereafter.

You made the statement:

I just said that yes it is if it's copyrighted.

I can't be blamed for the answer I gave because you didn't know before hand.

I'm sorry that your interwebs were cut off for a few. I'm glad that you learned that you can download the client straight from the source.

I own a whole slew of DVD's. Is it ok if I go to Wal-Mart and take a copy of one of the DVD's simply because I was careless and lost my own copy?

Yes, it's only a Walmart.

Yes, but I feel like you would still be responsible for those people and how they use the internet. Or you could just turn them in, that might work too. But someone there is at fault :P.

Not that I actually have any understanding of the law, this is just what would make sense to me. Not that laws actually make sense...

Kinda glad that idiot bumped this, as I was coming to post this article:

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2011/02/court-confirms-ip-addresses-arent-people-and-p2p-lawyers-know-it.ars

It's about a UK court case, but still relevant.
