Several months ago, when Starcraft 2 came out, I thought it might be a good idea to download the torrent to see if it was any good (or different from the first game.) Less than a week later my internet is shut off and I receive a letter in the mail from my ISP, Suddenlink, saying they were contacted by Blizzard complaining that we downloaded Starcraft from a torrent, and that our account was flagged.

We called them and they immediately turned our internet back on.

Today I come home and my wife tells me we were cut off again, this time because she downloaded the torrent for WoW to install on her new PC (we have TWO copies of the game and can't find the disks anywhere.) We haven't gotten a letter yet, but we called them and they told us we were "flagged" again, and turned us back on.

Ok... What the @#%^? What sort of power does Blizzard have that they can see everything we download, IMMEDIATELY contact our ISP and have our internet cut off when it's something of theirs?

We could download any movie or game on Earth, entire discographies in MP3 format, any TV show we want, and never have this problem. But if it belongs to Blizzard, it's "oh sh*t, they went and threatened our ISP again."

Doesn't Blizzard offer trials on all of their games? Why wouldn't you download one of those? Also, I find it best to buy their games directly from their websites, then I can download the game anytime I want and never have to look for the disks.

I don't know about a trail for Starcraft 2. The funny thing is, we never even opened the file. We downloaded it and completely forgot about it.

As for WoW, we already have the game, we just needed to install it on a new computer and couldn't find our disks.

I don't think they constantly monitor connections, they just contact all the ISP's they can and provide them with a constantly updated list of torrent filenames. Then they tell the ISP to shut off your internet if they catch you or they will sue the ISP for promoting piracy.

Yes, I can read. It was more of an added thought for future purchases.

Not that I condone piracy but replacing damaged disks etc is legitimate use.

Blizzard downloads the torrent and checks the IP addresses of all the peers that are sharing it. That's how they find you. They don't send a letter directly to you because they can't translate your IP address to a real address. What they can do is find out which ISP owns that IP address.

Solution: http://www.peerblock.com/

It's not a perfect solution, but it's a heck of a lot better than nothing. It'll block all known (based on lists you select hence not perfect) anti-p2p, government etc IP addresses from checking you out.

If you already have an account why not just download the client from battle.net and avoid the hassle?

I don't know. We never use battle.net. It's just first nature to find a torrent for everything.

Maybe you should rein that in before you lose your ISP for good.

And yeah, SC2 has a downloadable trial.

For some reason I like the idea of being able to ban China. It's already blocked all sorts of "clouds" from Amazon anti-P2P. Makes me wonder what those things were doing to begin with.

Just keep in mind it's not perfect. It's only as good as the lists are updated.

Heh, we got a pretty good scare letter involving the whole Hurt Locker torrent thing where our ISP was subpoenaed by the producer to get our real info. That seems a little more serious and Im interested to see if anything comes of it. Also interested to know how they can charge a person with anything. Since there is really no saying who was using my router to DL it.

technically if you own it it is your responsibility to secure it. If you don't, I'm pretty sure any illegal going-ons are on your head.

Yep this is why I pretty much love Blizzard. I have added my collection of games all the way back to Starcraft 1 I have of theirs and can download them as often as I need to. It is sweet.

I re-downloaded WoW off the blizz site last week, took me about three hours I think. Not many torrents can beat that :)

I thought most games (at least MMOs) have free downloads of the software on their site.

In other words, torrenting games is so 2004.

I also believe this is the case, and would probably hold up if they took you to court.

Oh boy, now downloading a torrent is "stealing."

It's so horribly wrong to make a copy of something, but it's OK for Blizzard to monitor everyone's downloads.

Hey, let's cut off the internet and threaten to sue the ISP of everyone who's ever downloaded an MP3 file without paying for it.
