Somehow someone used my paypal account this weekend without my knowledge. Strange thing is I haven't logged into my paypal for about a year. I have used paypal to do credit card transactions in a couple places (safe places) but didn't log in at the time...

So now I get to play around with the people at paypal to get my money back.

I still don't know how someone would have gotten into my account. Unless they guessed my info somehow. I honestly haven't typed the login info into a computer in quite some time.

I just received an email from paypal completely in French (I don't speak french or visit any french websites) saying something about a 40 dollar charge, and they were locking my account for suspicious activity.

Paypal isn't based out of france. have you called your bank to verify that funds were withdrawn, and if so, issue a fraud alert? If not, do so. This may be a "Phishing" scam attempt.

Having delt with a paypal fraud event before myself, I say, **** paypal and go through your bank / credit card to get it resolved first, then only involve paypal as a last resort. Otherwise you might end up out several hundred dollars...

Babelfish gave me the gist of it. Plus once I logged into paypal I got the same message in English. Who ever used my account must have done so from a French or Canadian website.

I'll spend some time at the bank tomorrow, making sure I can do a charge back if Paypal decides not to give me my money back. I'll find a way to get the money back.

It is a real email. The money was taken from my bank account on the same day. I noticed the bank account charge first, then my email.

The email was only french, I assume, because who ever used it was using a french interface. I got the same emails in English once I logged in and started a dispute.

I used paypal's dispute because my bank isn't available until Monday, I tried calling my bank first, but they were closed. Every password and questions have been changed on all my accounts dealing with email and paypal.

If I remember correctly, the last place I used Paypal was purchasing Minecraft. Before that was Allakhazam Premium. (Not accusing anyone). Both times I didn't log in, just used them to pay by credit card. Strange how this happened.

After about 3 years of disuse, I got an email from paypal informing me that they were cancelling my account. They siad that the reason for this was that old ignored/forgotten accounts were the ones most frequently targeted by hackers. Makes sense I guess...its probably harder for someone to notice that their inactive account has been compromised quickly.

I guess the good news is I haven't been charged anything else over the weekend. I don't know if it's because I caught it soon enough and changed all my info, or if it's because how ever it happened was a mistake...

I finally got to talk to the bank today, and filled out the papers there for an unauthorized use of my account. And called Paypal, and after dealing with a stupid automated voice recognition system I finally talked with a real person and unlocked my account, proceeded to remove all information from my paypal account so it wouldn't be able to happen again.

Now I wonder what will happen when my bank quickly reverses the charge and paypal still sits waiting for response from the other party...

Well, I got all my money back, and removed all of my info from Paypal so they can't deduct directly from my card again. I don't know if it was Paypal just finally getting back to me or my bank getting involved and pushing it.

I guess I'll have to go to the bank tomorrow and make sure they aren't still investigating.

I still am not sure how it happened or who the guy is/was. No information was given to me other than I got my money back. I'm not quite sure if I should ask for a new card from my bank, so far nothing else out of the ordinary has appeared on my account, so I don't think my card info was compromised.
