Eulogy Of My CatFollow

If this was one of my dogs, I'd eulogize them in =4. Don't ask me why, it just is.

A few people know my cat and have even gotten to see my cat Cupcake. Her weight and size are legendary.

I have to put her down tomorrow morning and I'm devestated. Somehow, she broke her front left leg in a bunch of different places and sustained severe nerve damage. The vet said that she could try to save her leg, but most likely it would have to be amputated, but unfortunately, the nerve damage is severe enough that we don't know what kind of quality of life Cupcake can have.

Cupcake was a rescued kitten that I found in September 1999. I was on my lunch hour heading to the mall and I saw 2 thugs throwing back and forth what looked like a furry little ball. One of them went long, the other threw a Hail Mary and I saw this tiny little kitten. I furiously pulled over and went after those punks, cussing them out and yelling at them. All they did was drop that adorable little ball of fur and walk away. I picked her up and she was just so cute and cowering in the palm of my hand that I knew I could never let her go.

I did take her to the shelter and was told that the shelter was full. Taking her to the pound would have meant she'd be put down. I didn't intend to lose my lunch hour just to kill a cat. So I took her home.

And fed her. And she grew. And grew. And grew. And at her largest size, she weighed about 32 pounds. And when she got that big, Ray called her Poundcake.

She is the most mellow, quiet, sweetest cat ever. She would just quietly sit in your lap for hours on end, if you let her. She let the other cats knead their paws all over her. She let the dogs sniff her and our Great Dane would try to fit her head in his mouth. I'm sure it was a sign of adoration as he never tried to chew her.

She and Charmaine grew up together. She's Charmaine's cat. When Charmaine was able to figure out tha Cupcake was her cat, she carried that cat with her wherever she went. As she got older, Cupcake would lay on her toys, blankets and backpack. Those 2 are inseparable at times.

But tomorrow morning, at 9:20 a.m., I have to take Cupcake back to the vet. The vet said the nerve damage is bad enough that Cupcake, mercifully, is not in any pain so we can spend one last night with her. So I'm feeding her a salmon handroll, seaweed salad and yellow tail sashimi. She is a sushi fiend. As soon as she ses the bag with the local sushi bar's logo, she starts meowing, knowing that I have some masago for her to nibble on as an appetizer to her salmon roll.

So, Cupcake, we're going to miss you. I'm so glad you were my little kitty.

I hate cats. I'm allergic and I usually end up in the hospital if I'm near one for any period of time.

But..

That was about the saddest story I've ever heard.

Good for you for saving her from a quick death on the streets and giving her a good home in which she could thrive.

Another shot to show that her belly could jiggle like a bowlful of jelly.

Sorry to hear about your cat. I know first hand that having to put down one of your best friends can do to you.
Cats are like your best friend at times.

Kudos to you for rescuing her. I hope the punks throwing her like a football get cancer and **** fissures.

I'm sorry to hear about having to put her down. We had a similar situation with my wife's cat of 11 years and it was pretty tough on her.

You gave her a better life than she could have ever of had. Yes, be sad, but remember to be happy, for all that you all shared together.

Aww :( such a loss! But - your family is the best thing that could have happened to her.

I've nursed quite a number of abandoned and mistreated kittens at the shelter, and most of them didn't even make it. To have a ball of fluffy cuteness die in the palm of your hand just because someone did not care for its existence is infuriating. Good to hear Cupcake ended up having a good life!

And respect for saving her in the first place...

I'm sorry to hear that Thumb :(. I would hate to lose one of my cats, and I can tell that Cupcake holds a very special place in your heart. At least she lived a full life and was clearly loved by her family. And she loves sushi, so she's pretty awesome.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose pets. I've always been kind of an animal lover. I've lost too many, most had their life cut short by accidents or illness which probably hurts the worse. Smiley: frown

Yea yea, I know, I replied to the "reports of Cupcake's death being exaggerated" thread, but just had to say that this is the saddest thread I've read in a long time.

My current (and last cat, as my wife is mildly allergic, but got him anyway) will get one very much like this when his time comes. I've had cats all my life, including a 6-toe that would play ball with the other cats (as in, literally pick up a ball with her paw, then toss it across the floor for the other cats to play with), but this one is something special.

However, he does not have his own gravitational field. I think that cat is less laying on your daughter as much as she descended from orbiting around him and is now being crushed by the unseen forces caused by his mass. If that cat ever went to Japan, they would run screaming from it!

I hope that Cupcake will wind up living a much longer life now.

Cupcake is an order of magnitude larger than my ex-girlfriend's cat, and trust me, that is saying something. (The big ones make better pillows! Smiley: nod) In other news, I'm really glad I read the other thread before this one, because this is heartbreaking and I started tearing up even knowing that Cupcake is actually gonna be okay.

I guess everyone finds it funny, but I can't help feel it's sort of cruel to overfeed a cat to that extent.

Well, you can't technically overfeed an animal, unless you use the tactic they use for fattening livers of some animals.

The more likely cause is that she is feeding her animals a cheaper grade of food, which has a large amount of filler products in them. My cat actually was quite fat at one point when we switched foods to a cheaper brand when money was short. Once we changed back to a healthier, more expensive brand (and one not owned by a litter-producing company), he dropped the weight very rapidly.

Those pictures are old, but my favorite ones of her. Actually, she's slimmed down quite a bit since we moved to a bigger house and she has to move around a bit more and I realized she was eating all the other cats' food as well. So we feed the cats separately now. We feed the cats Science Diet.

Apparently she ate other cats as well judging by that size.
