The first person in history has been confirmed to have been cured of HIV as of today. I call that a victory for SCIENCE! if you ask me.

Wait, how did he go from leukemia to HIV? It only says he went in for chemo for the leukemia, and then suddenly the stem-cell transplant cured him of the HIV he may not have had in the first place. He didn't even have T-Cell leukemia.

From what i recall 2 years ago, i believe they were treating for leukemia, and it just happened to cure the AIDs, which wasn't their intention. I might remember wrong, as it's been a while, and i'm too lazy to look it up, but i think that's what happened.

The treatment was life-threatening and not something many HIV patients would want to go through,

I think most patients who are already living with a life-threatening disease really would not mind a life-threatening cure as long as the chance of it working are good.

At least not this one.

Not when there are medications that can help suppress the advance of HIV that don't have a 35% mortality rate just from the procedure.

Dont rain on my parade!

On a related note... I'm now done with one of my meds I've been taking for a couple of years. That means I'm just taking one pill daily now. Smiley: thumbsup

Translated: They couldn't manufacture the medicine anymore and you just finished off the last of the world's supply. Way to ruin it for everyone else. Smiley: disappointed

Everyone would be in big trouble... considering that medication was Bactrim.

I am happy for this. Though I wish it was more conclusive. This is affected by finding out today that one of my favorite docs, who is awesome and a father of 5, just found out his 4 y.o. daughter has stage 3 aggressive Lymphoma... Not to start a research/science/business/politics debate but I don't even know how to finish. I have been so depressed and hugging my kids. I hit enter wondering what will happen in the OOT.

It seems like anything is possible with stem cells. Whenever I read an article like that it makes me think we aren't far off from becoming a civilization of immortal supermenandwomen.

I give it another 30-40 years and we'll work out exactly what makes stem cells tick. Then we can synthesize synthetic substances that mimic the effects. Pills to cure cancer. Aids vaccine in the water supply.

I think the idea would be to have someone ingest the water. Nixnot can probably still remain as dirty as he wants.

Now if they could make that so it doesn't cost a billion dollars, we might beat aids
