So, I just graduated and moved up to the Chicago area. Right now I am using my parents mini van (sex machine am I rit?). So my dad, as kind of a graduation gift is willing to trade in the van for another used car. His conditions are that is has to be an American made brand, and that the model should be around 2002-2006. He didn't tell me a price range, but that will vary depending on where you look.

So, what I am asking. What are some good American made cars they are 4 door, pretty fuel efficient, and not ugly? I'm not a huge car person so I really don't know too much about them.

Thanks for the help!

Are you living in Chicago, or in the suburbs? If it's the former, don't own a car unless it's unavoidable; commuting anywhere in the city is an exercise in despair and frustration.

Around 2002-06 model year? American sedans were terrible back then (and, with few exceptions, still are).

Check out the Chevy Impala and the Pontiac Grand Prix, I guess.

It has to be an American brand? That means it has to be a Ford because the others all blow and Ford's the opnly one making any steps forward in the last 10 years. Everything else is a ******* that might look good, but most likely has serious quality issues. Avoid Chrysler/dodge at all costs.

Get a Ford Escape, with 4x4 capabilities.

I'm living in the northern suburbs. I know not to get a car if I had to travel downtown, it's nasty trying to drive down there.

I do like the Impala and the Grand Prix. Those were really the only ones I could think of since I have driven them as rentals before.

I don't know if it absolutely HAS to be. But my dad is one of those "American or go home" when it comes to cars. I really don't know why.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Seriously, a Ford Mustang. I'm lusting after that car.

Oh wait, 2002-2006 year? I only like the new body.

Get a subscription to Autocheck.com is my advice. Carfax is a piece of **** and their reports are worthless. When I was car shopping this past summer, I'd have a Carfax report come back clean and Autocheck telling me that the car was a salvage title with some serious accidents on its record. This actually happened to me three times looking at cars off of AutoTrader where they'll throw up a link to a Carfax report in the vehicle description.

Get the $45 unlimited checks for a month package and go crazy with it. After 20+ VIN checks, it reminds you that the $45 package is a personal consumer service and warns you not to use it commercially but it doesn't actually try to cut you off.

I drive a Chevy from the time period in question. Coming up on 100k miles and no mechanical failures, the only complaint I have is the air filter is a pain in the *** to change.

What's your point? Not every car is going to be crappy coming from any major car dealership. Some are just more likely to produce duds. Chev tends to be one of those. Out of the American dealers, Ford tends to have the lowest likelihood of producing a dud.

Since when is 100k without blowing up good?

My old Nissan truck was at 375k when we sold it. Never had an issue with the thing.

Do you have evidence to back up your claim or is this purely opinion?

I've got a 2001 Mercury Sable for sale in Des Moines. 4-door, white, cleanish body and title, power windows and locks, CD player, interior is fair, AC needs a new pulley(cheap fix), transmission is slipping and leaks. Keep it topped off and you hardly notice it. 116k easy miles. $1900 obo. Seriously. PM me if you're interested. If it helps sell it, I'm willing to include a jar of my ejaculate.

Purely opinion, as that's all the OP asked for. Do you have evidence other than your anecdotal piece?

I was using it as a reference to show it wasn't a Sunday driver. 100k in 5 years is normally considered alot in the auto industry.

Thanks for that, I'll talk to my dad about it and see what he says.

I should, I would much prefer a foreign car. I'll see if I can edge him more in the direction I would want. Though with a free car, beggars can't be choosers.

You realize, of course, that most "foreign" cars are manufactured in the US?

I should hope he realizes that, or I might have to question his knowledge about cars and why he wants it to be American so badly.
