Why does it seem like the Asylum moves faster than the OOT? Has anyone else noticed this?

I always thought that the Asylum was slower, but had more detailed conversation. The OOT was more random, with shorter threads and more random, funny, and silly things. But it seems that each day the Asylum has more new threads and longer ones.

I blame /K/.

But seriously, the OOT has been slow for months now.

What's this? What's this?
There's color everywhere
What's this?
There's white things in the air
What's this?
I can't believe my eyes
I must be dreaming
Wake up, Jack, this isn't fair
What's this?

What's this? What's this?
There's something very wrong
What's this?
There's people singing songs

What's this?
The streets are lined with
Little creatures laughing
Everybody seems so happy
Have I possibly gone daffy?
What is this?
What's this?

There are children throwing snowballs here
Instead of throwing heads
They're busy building toys
And absolutely no one's dead

There's frost on every window
Oh, I can't believe my eyes
And in my bones I feel the warmth
That's coming from inside

Oh, look
What's this?
They're hanging mistletoe, they kiss
Why that looks so unique, inspired
They're gathering around to hear a story
Roasting chestnuts on a fire
What's this?
What's this?

In here they've got a little tree, how *****
And who would ever think
And why?

They're covering it with tiny little things
They've got electric lights on strings
And there's a smile on everyone
So, now, correct me if I'm wrong
This looks like fun
This looks like fun
Oh, could it be I got my wish?
What's this?

Oh my, what now?
The children are asleep
But look, there's nothing underneath
No ghouls, no witches here to scream and scare them
Or ensnare them, only little cozy things
Secure inside their dreamland
What's this?

The monsters are all missing
And the nightmares can't be found
And in their place there seems to be
Good feeling all around

Instead of screams, I swear
I can hear music in the air
The smell of cakes and pies
Is absolutely everywhere

The sights, the sounds
They're everywhere and all around
I've never felt so good before
This empty place inside of me is filling up
I simply cannot get enough

I want it, oh, I want it
Oh, I want it for my own
I've got to know
I've got to know
What is this place that I have found?
What is this?
Christmas Town, hmm...

Because spam posts can only indefinitely sustain threads when forum constituents are immature enough to be indefinitely amused by them?

Because we are unaccepting of new blood that is anything but faultless in its first appearance in the OOT?

Or perhaps because, and most frighteningly, our community is no longer full of interesting people doing interesting things of which to post about?

Or that forum activity goes through what could best be described as waves, having peak moments of activity and droughts. Eventually the forum will be active again and eventually it'll slow down again, which will once again bring forth either a "POST MOAR" thread or "Remember the good old days?" thread.

A wavelength of years doesn't do much to help us. Also wave packets of activity can travel at different speeds (for example even slower) than the waves themselves. This analogy gets worse the more you think about it.

That's your problem right there. Rational thought combined with logic and reasoning is the cancer that is killing the OOT.

I'll try to stop killing threads accidentally. And if you are my FB friend, the SPs posted an entertaining pix to my wall (they sent me the NSFW ones). God I love how much fun they have. :-)

The OOT will pick up here around February or so, when we have the giant tsunami of 20k posts.

Thats the problem with a forum. After a time it becomes increasingly difficult to think up posts that haven't been done. Of your average forum population even under ideal conditions, you have maybe 60% lurkers, 10% occasional repliers, 29% active repliers, and maybe 1% new topic creators. You can get a higher topic creation ratio if there is some sort of statistical bonus or benifit to posting new topics (kind of like FARK greenlights) but generally you will only have a few people who decide to make new topics. Partially it's an ego thing, partially those people are just more direct. But even then, the average person will only make so many topics at a time, because most of them get self concious when there are too many threads with their name on the front page. So it becomes a dilemma. The faster the forum goes, the more topics they feel they can post, but the more topics that one person posts, the slower the forum goes because people get irritated by the spamming. Some people try the "post a billion topics all at once" route and occasionally, it works. But usually it backfires on the topic poster, so they post even fewer topics.

Over time, you begin to run out of topics, and even when you do think of new topics, you start to second guess yourself. "Didn't someone already post that?" "Is that too similar to that other thread?" "people will think this thread is dumb" etc. The truth of the matter is that if people don't like a thread, they will make it into something else so it doesn't really matter.

The situation gets even more complicated when one of your thread creators gets admin, since then there is a whole nother layer of doublethink on top.

Thats why I'm always on about getting new people into a forum. You don't have enough topic creators to sustain a growth pace. If I were you I'd have someone do some recruiting in the other game forums. Just know going into it that whoever does that it will backfire on you, even if in the end it is what helps jumpstart things, some people will see it as an invasion and will react negitivly.

Really, one of the best moves strictly from population density we could do is to re-merge OOT and Asylum.

The Asylum scares me. I would start a thread about it but think it has already been done and people will think it is stupid.
