Gas or charcoal?

Ray and I have used both in the past. I bought him a charcoal grill this weekend that also doubles as a smoker. He's really excited. But when I told one of my friends, he totally bagged on my choice for a charcoal grill.

Personally, I think the meat gains a nice flavor when it's grilled over charcoal. Gas grill is fine too (and the meat cooks very nicely evenly over a gas grill) but I just prefer charcoal.

So, gas or charcoal?

I have a Gas Grill and i LOVE it... I also like the charcoal but it takes to much time to get a nice even heat.

gas, I much prefer the taste of the meat and spices I put on it to sawdust+petroleum+borax

Gas if you are cooking, charcoal if you are not. I grill. I love charcoal and hate the way I smell. Love the convenience of gas but miss some flavor. Have never learned to work the gas grill.

I prefer gas, but the hubby prefers charcoal and he's quite the charcoal-er chef, so that's what we get.

Ray loves this grill that I got because you can raise or lower the charcoal tray and he's really excited to try his hand on smoking some meat, something that he hasn't done since he was a kid I guess.

The convenience of gas was a big factor as to why we had a gas grill before, but man when meat is grilled over charcoal right, I just love the taste.

MrDF has a grill like that, hasty bake or something, really versatile little grill thingy.

Charcoal all the way. 50% of the flavor of grilled food comes from the smoke of the charcoal. Without charcoal, you might as well just broil it in the oven or pan sear it. Also, grilling with charcoal is easy once you learn how to start the fire properly.

charcol, if you are willing to devote the time and effort to using it properly. If you are just throwing steaks on a grill occasionally, gas is the better choice. If you will be barbiquing alot, and want to get into smoking meats with exotic wood chips and whatnot, and are willing to learn how to build and maintain coal beds, then charcol is your friend. a lousy barbiquer qill get better results with gas over charcol. A decent chef will get decent results with either. A really qood barbiquer will get amazing results with a handful of apple and cherry woodchips and a well seasoned smoker grill.

Charcoal is great for flavor, but you just can't beat the convenience of gas. In the time it takes a charcoal grill to finally be ready to cook, you could have already cooked and eaten and be cleaning up with a gas grill.

I've never noticed much of a difference between the taste of the two, though I don't have the most discerning of taste buds. I suppose I prefer gas for the convenience. But I've never been a situation where I had to grill on a deadline, so I've never really minded taking the extra time to set up the charcoal.

When I've got the money for it (and a house, for that matter) I think I'll get a real nice gas grill. For now, I've just got a portable medium-sized charcoal one. Fits the apartment real nice, and it's easy to wheel into storage when not in use.

charcoal, although I have both for when I just want something quick.

Also I never use the charcoal briquettes, get proper charcoal.

I'm lazy so I go with gas. I wouldn't mind charcoal that much though.

I'm lazy and prefer gas. If you want to smoke the meat, I prefer a ceramic smoker. That said, we own a charcoal grill, not a gas one, because we're cheap. One tip I'd like to add(something else I learned from watching AB), is that you should always use chunk charcoal rather than those silly briquettes.

I don't get the whole "I'm lazy" argument against charcoal. I have a weber grill and I just line the bottom with foil and put the charcoal on top of that. When I'm done, I pull up the foil and dispose of the entire thing. It takes like 2 minutes. For cleaning the rack, I simply let it heat up while the fire is getting up to temp and then scrub with a wire brush and wipe down with a wet towel. Again, 5 minutes cleanup / prep time tops.

It's not so much the time as it is getting the charcoal ready, spreading it out, and then cleaning up. That's a lot of stuff that you're not doing with a gas grill. Don't get me wrong, it's almost always worth it, but if I'm just grilling some smokies then I won't bother.
