People you look up to...Follow

Now, we all have people we look up to. Some of them are exciting. Some are cliché. Some trite, vacuous excuses for life that we call "celebrities", people of very little actual worth aside from the fact that they look pretty.

One of the people I look up to can be described as exciting, from an intellectual point of view. Those of you who live in the US of A will probably have heard of him, his name is Christopher Hitchens. For those who have not heard of him, he is a political and social commentator, a journalist and freethinker. I enjoy seeing him debate or speak in general. He has a brilliant way of demolishing his opponents with such eloquence.

Anyway...

He has also recently discovered that he is suffering from oesophageal cancer, which has a very low chance of survival. I believe it is around 15%. However, as is evident from his recent editorial in Vanity Fair, he seems to be coping rather well.

This does nothing but reinforce my admiration for the man.

I was wondering who you people held in high regard, for whatever reason.

Or perhaps I'm just inviting you to look at me aghast, thinking "OMFG YOU ADMIRE HIM?!".

Nope, not really. There are plenty of people who I respect for one reason or another, but I've never really been one for this whole hero-worship role-model business.

Also, I'd generally hold off on calling someone's life vacuous when all you know about them consists of the kind of sh*t-raking that appeals to people that read celebrity magazines. The magazines are vacuous, certainly, and exceedingly dull to boot, but that doesn't make anyone featured in them a zombie by default. You know your response is usually the one angling for, right? The disdain, that is; I assume you don't actually buy the magazines.

...I look up to my two boys... not for the fact that they're taller than their mom, but simply for the fact that they're both sarcastic smartasses that have tons of common sense and have never steered me in the wrong direction. I kinda' sorta' think Bridget-the-Midget should have her own empire as well. ...I guess that's besides the point... or under... meh... whatever.Smiley: grin

Mikael Akerfeldt probably goes here for me because he's made such incredible music with Opeth.
And Henri Cartier-Bresson because he, in my opinion, captured the very essence of photography.
That said, he also counts as one of the greatest photographers of all time and I can't imagine any photographer not having a great respect for his work.

Edit: And looking up to someone doesn't equal hero worship. Hero worship is going a step too far.

This.

Perhaps I should have made the title "People you respect", or something.

Why do some of you imply that looking up to someone is hero worship?

Anyway, I don't look up to many people because I really don't care what other people do with their lives and few have influenced me in a way that I deem memorable. However, there's a guy I used to work with, Ed, who retired from the air force and was hired as a general manager at my place of employment. I think he was a Lt. Colonel, but I can't remember. Anyway, the guy had two masters degrees and was just generally a smart f'n dude. Not only that, he was one of the coolest, nicest people I've ever met. I consider it a pleasure to have cross paths with him, and admire his success in life.
