I'm in the market for a new bed. Mine's somewhere between 10-15 years old, and is finally wearing out entirely (I've been waking up with nasty back pain). Anyone know of a decent, fairly firm mattress that can support a big guy? I'm not skimping on this one.

Go shopping. Smiley: mad

Do NOT buy a mattress at the first place you go to. Hit at least three places, tell them the same requirements (side sleeper, back sleeper, preference as to firmness, how many pillows you tend to use). See if they all recommend the same brand and type, and then get the best price on that bad boy (ask the last place you go whether they'll price match if theirs isn't the cheapest).

See if they offer to set up your new one and take away your old one, too - that's worth a few extra bucks, to me. If you have a truck, maybe it isn't.

The bedroom store here in the St. Louis area has a test bed with adjustable sensitivity. Try it out and they can use the number that feels best to you to determine a set of mattresses (of all types) that are compatible with your preference.

Mattress store people look at me like I have two heads when I tell them I'm a stomach sleeper.

The guy at Denver Mattress tried to tell me that if you don't sleep on your back you'll crush your organs. Smiley: laugh

I'd suggest that you snatch up whatever deal you can find. But in reality, you should sleep on it.

I want one of those sleep number beds. But they are expensive. Good luck since I was no help.

You have to try them out and try them out at different stores.

I've always wanted the Tempur-Pedic mattress, but holy hell, that's almost buying a car.

You can get a 3inch memory foam mattress topper at a nice department store for around $80 on sale and since you really only use the first 3inches of a Tempur-pedic mattress anyway its like you have one. Its what saved me when I first moved out and had to use a supper old hard mattress for about 2months. Those things are worth the money.

I was always skeptical of buying these, but I suppose it's going on my wish list.

We have a foam layer for our mattress and it's pretty great. I can't compare it to a legitimate Tempur-Pedic but comapred to just the mattress the foam is pretty awesome.

It's no tempur pedic, but they're well worth the money.

So, Ash, I guess you should just forego getting a new mattress and getting a mattress topper.

I suppose its worth looking into. My mattress has developed a sag over the last decade or so, so I'm not entirely sure that would solve the problem.

How often did you flip your mattress?

You should try some self expanding foam then top it with a mattress cover, save money and you can claim it as a do-it-yourself project.

He means the other side is unusable from those bed wedding incidents a few years back.

This would pack a better wallop without the homophone.

But yes, pillow-top mattresses are generally not meant to be flipped over. They do this so you have to buy them more often.

He ****** his mattress so hard there's a hole in it?

I don't see how that'd be a problem; it'd be a very small hole.

Those foam mattress toppers, how are they at distributing heat? I had heard that they suffered from some major hot spots(though that could be older technology) and that has kept me from considering one. Is it true, or as I suspect, a problem that has been fixed?
