I didn't go to some fancy private school. Public schooling here.

In Iowa, it's a requirement to have one semester of Economy and a semester of Government to graduate.

Same in Texas, believe it or not.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Iowa follows Texas' education standard, since they pretty much control the education of our country via textbooks anyway.

I didn't realize how much Texas controlled the educational system until I found that out from my girlfriend, who spent most of grade school in TX. Apparently they would get brand new textbooks for free every year. >:(

My housing costs are covered by the renters so I could probably live indefinitely, as long as I didn't spend any other money. My friends in the field who've been looking for work have generally found it within 6 months or so. I'd probably pick up a part time job somewhere to get some spending money while I job hunted, and to keep from killing myself from boredom. Or I'd go back to school for a masters.

What does surprise me is just how uneducated the population is there compared to here with the control over textbooks. It's not like we aren't using the same ones.

I'm sure its a combination of class sizes, bad teaching, and an unnecessarily extreme focus on high school sports over learning. The material is there for those who are self-motivated.

If I was fired today, I'd just call back the guy who has been trying to get me to work for him for the past month or so.

If for some unknown reason that fell through, I have a solid amount stored away.

For some of us the situation has happened and its not fun by any means. Your loyal to your company and making good money. However, after years of being loyal to your company your company is no longer loyal to you. The owner's are only loyal to their pockets and getting the cheapest workers and making fast cash. It's the american dream! At least the company is good enough to give you a layoff package that is better than nothing. They even give you a chance to find other positions in the company. (LOL like there was any to be found) Suddenly, dispite all your efforts your out the door with barely enough money to make your bills. Unemployment will support you for a bit but you just are so strapped for cash its not funnny.

The market is crap and its filled with people in your same situation. Companys realize that and jobs are hard to get and you soon find that 99% of the companys want younger people more willing to take the underpaid jobs and the abuse that most of us would not back then. Months go by and still no jobs let alone a single interview. Things get desperate. Bills pile up and go unpaid and soon your filing bankruptcy just to even try to start again new. Not fun and even worse the bankruptcy can keep you from another job. Finally you land a job. It's not even in the area of expertise you have but the pay is barely reasonable and dispite the risks of being assaulted or hurt there you take it. Trying to hang on to anything you have left. You realize you took a trememdous pay cut but you have to eat and keep a roof over your head. In my case 25k pay cut.

Remember this,
Everyone looses jobs. Finding a secure one is now non existant. (Well manbe cept state and federal ones) Save money and be ready for the worst because companys are no longer loyal to their employees. They are not what they were 10-15 years ago where you considered working till retirement there.

Most of us concluded long ago that your sob story is really just a case of your company shedding an idiot employee. It's sad really that you continue to believe otherwise.

As to getting fired, it happened to me once. I was out of work for a couple months and then I found a new job. Sh*t happens, move on.

Damnit, I've only slept about ten hours over the course of the last four days. Counting isn't something my brain can handle right now. I should really go to sleep.

Yeah. Whilst posting my reply, I noticed that Xsarus already had, so I didn't include the obligatory explanation. Wasn't going to waste a post count though! ;)

I've worked 2 jobs in one capacity or another since I was 17. Basically I have expensive computer tastes. This is also most likely indicitive of something seriously wrong with me, but thats beside the point. If I lost one or the other jobs, i'd be ok for a while until it would start to hurt. However I have several fallback positions in that event, including computer maintenance, web design, network implementation, and eventually making shiny things on the CRC robot which would probably generate enough income based on past history to keep me going. I also could rent out some of the rooms I have here in theory if it came to that.

Yeah, but for that week or so without employment? I'd be screwed.

as it would be my completely own damn fault I would be forced to commit seppuku in the rear vestibule to spare my family the shame of acknowledging my continued existence.

I don't think I would get fired for that though, everyone I've ever worked for has loved me, and would understand that I wasn't actively seeking that. They'd probably just make fun of me for weeks ~_~;

In today's job market, how easy would you think it would be for you to get another job?
It took me ~11 months last time, or 5 months after I started taking it seriously, networking and not being as picky. I'm in a better position at this point, and the economy is looking up, so I'd estimate 2-3 months?
Quote:
Would you settle for something less if nothing else is available?
I would settle for something out of field or lower pay if I felt there was a good opportunity to grow within the organization, increase my own knowledge base, &|| it would look good on a resume later.

I'm not willing to work in NJ, no.

I wouldn't be thrilled but we have enough in savings (plus paid-out vacation time plus unemployment) to keep the mortgage paid for a good while on Flea's salary. Heck, once the baby's born with me staying home and not paying for child care we might turn a profit!

I've worked various manners of minimum wage jobs in my time and would do so again versus living in a box.
