4 or 5 users could send an individual Jophiel post sub default right now, the next post he made would be back to excellent.

Technically both posts would be excellent, one would just be rated lower.

I know, easy for me to say, but karma is fine how it is. There's few sub-default posters who didn't deserve it and once you're at scholar+ everything else is just pretty colors.

I've been here a while now, and I've seen quite a few instances where posters have grown a lot more mature over time, or just a lot better (practised) at posting after a few years. Also quite a few trolls who have mellowed out. But they are stuck with low overall karma from their bad early years which doesn't reflect the overall quality of what they post in the last year or two. And then there are all the posters who keep their early guru/sage from discovering celebratory CJs in the OOT/Aslylum early on, but whose contributions to the forums don't reflect their karma state.

I'm still a Scholar because I made my first thousand or so posts about 6 years ago as a teenager trying to "fit in" with the Asylum back when it was hardcore. Basically all I did was make an *** out of myself and probably came close to being banned. I know I was definitely made no-rate for a long time and had sub-scholar status for many years after.

I'd like to believe I've grown up a lot since then, and my karma somewhat represents this as I am now borderline Sage. But because of the old days, unless I start all over, I don't think I'll ever actually make Sage.

I also think that there should be an expiration on ratings. I've left threads that were "excellent" in many =10 forums that were years old, only to go back and find them rated down with no explanation when I stumbled upon them again. People with stupidly weird grudges deliberately hunt down someone's old posts and rate them down, just to prove a point. They're unlikely to budge me from Sage, but it's still annoying as heck, as some of those threads were good discussions.

Maybe a rating expiration of a month? In th MMO world, a month old thread is Olde, and at that point any ratings on people's karma - up or down - are pretty irrelevant.

Er, there is. Rating old threads won't have any effect on the users' karma scores.

How old, though? And while it won't affect a present karma score, it still affects the individual post.

No it doesn't. You can't even rate posts that are older than X.

#34REDACTED, Posted: Jul 20 2010 at 5:42 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The present Karma system is broken and enables people and their "Buds" To rate each other up to Guru in a rather short period of time. The Fact that Admin and Mods ignored the rapid rating game in the personal log area and did nothing helped this along drastically.

It's "Clique", Christ.

It's obvious you knew it was wrong but were too lazy to even think about looking up the right spelling.

Tailmon is reason 1 why the karma system must remain the same.

Not that tailmon would ever get scholar if it was changed.

The comma goes inside the quotes. Smiley: tongue And Allegory taught me a long time ago that when you're talking about a specific word, you should italicize it instead of quoting it. I remembered, Allegory!!

Or because you're an idiot. But blaming the system and the "clicks" probably helps you sleep sounder.

In another thread we talked about karma a little and Kao said he wouldn't mind receiving suggestions for karma.

n-1Σ [Kn(n-1)(1+A)] / [(n-1)(1+A)]

Where Kn is the karma rating for that post, n is nth post, and A is a volatility variable. Each K is a simple average of the karma ratings for each post.

Won't the world end in a fiery explosion on the first post? Or at least a divide by zero exception?

If Postcount <= 1
then karma = 3
else karma = n-1Σ [Kn(n-1)(1+A)] / [(n-1)(1+A)]

Not that hard.

edit: actually it's already set up to ignore the ratings of your first 16 posts, so it should already be fine.

Technically it was actually the admin karma ********* you got for making two ratebots back in the day that has kept you at scholar. Don't make ratebots. It pisses us off.

But they were all the rage back then. :3 At the very least, the separate accounts I made were made to show that they were obviously mine. The idea to rate myself up didn't even come to me until well after I made them. Back then I just wanted to get scholar since I had a rocky start. =10 was full of fun times back then, lol.

I may never get any kind of good Karma from all the abuses of the system. But, I never cared for the Karma system after a while becauss the haves will always keep the have nots down even if they do make good posts. It's like a grade school "Click" here.

Other people make separate accounts to rate themselves up. I write bots to rate other people down. Or at least, I did, once, but I never used it and still got perma-no-rated.

Yeah, karma is pointless.

I have a simple rule I try to follow in regards to karma. If 50 or more individual people per month are activly rating you down, perhaps the problem isn't karma camping, and maybe I should stay out of the way. People such as varrusword fall into this category.

Tell you what though, how about this, Tailmon. I'll reset your karma to 3.00 if you want, just this once. Let you sink or swim on your own merits and see what happens. People rate you less often than they did, maybe you have made a more favorable impression on them. Or maybe they got tired of rating. Either way, it's a shot if you want it. If so, reply here or PM me. If not, don't say I never offered a reset.

And it's been sooo much quieter ever since!

But, same deal. You've been norated quite some time. I'll give you another shot if you want it. **** up again, and it goes right back on. you game for round 2? PM or reply. either works.

Anyone else while we are at it?
