Sophia was going to be the default name for a daughter should Flea & I produce one. We both liked it for different reasons and were perfectly content with it.

Then it shot up to #2 in the Social Security list of most popular baby names. Flea booted it and we had to come up with a new one.

Name your kid, Mia.

If we ever have children we've already picked out the names. The boy name isn't in any baby book I've read, we made it up to fit the initials we want. Not posting it cause I don't want it used.

I hope no one misconstrues my taking offense at this avatar as insecurity over my own manhood, which I assume is quite adequate.

When I was a kid, I really hated my name (Théa ) because no one good ever pronounce it correctly - I had various people cal me Fay, Thigh, Fire, and Furr because they couldn't work out to say it . I also hated that when we went to naff souvenir shops, they would always have personalised items with my brothers name (Martin) and none with mine . My mum even made a rule that if I ever saw anything with my name on, I could have it . I never did as a child .

Recently, I've gotten a couple of albuns by Thea Gilmore as a joke present from my mum , and a book by an author also called Thea . I actually like my name now, I like it being different from all the other mums in the school playgroud . When someone shouts out julie, several heads whip round. Ditto Claire, Emma, Kate etc . I'm the only one with my name there, so I always know its me .

I always liked the name Emma Elizabeth (before "Friends" making it one of the most popular names). When we found out our first was a boy, we had a hard time choosing a name. Any time the subject of names arose, my mom would insist that she still liked the name Emma...

Lol. My husband refused to let my daughter's middle name be "Scott." I am pretty sure there was no way he was going to go for Emma for his son.

I also hated my name when I was young for the same reasons (mispronounced, no personalization). Now I appreciate the fact that not many people have the same name (at least here in the States).

I only hated when people called me (ZOMG KATIE'S NAME IS AMANDA) Mandy. I hated that. In my 2nd grade class we had 4 Amandas. Ama, Amanda, Mandy and AJ. I hated getting stuck with being Mandy. I remember in 6th grade they let us choose what we wanted to be called if there was more than 1 of us with the same name in class. I went by Krissy. I found it hilarious to ignore people until they called me by the right name.

Yeah, people were positively gobsmacked about how to pronounce "Jillian" even when I told them that it was @#%^ing phonetic. Smiley: mad It is a much more popular name now in the states than it was when I was born. I didn't meet another Jillian until I was 20, save one little girl whose parents liked my name so much, they gave their child the same first and middle name. :D

Haha, one of my great grandmothers was called Bertha. The others were Martha, Martha and Hertha (which is also the name of my town's football team). All those sound sort of the same.

My first name, Susanne, is okay, at least the way English speakers pronounce it.
Middle name #1 is Gudrun. It's my mum's name. I don't like it.
Middle name #2 is Elisabeth. It's my mother's mother's name. It's good.
Middle name #3 is Thea. That's my father's mother's middle name. Her first name is Inge which is apparently hard to pronounce. Thea is my favourite of the four in German pronounciation. I have trouble remembering how it's pronounced in English. Smiley: mad

I think I'm gonna give all my children Welsh/Irish names and Greek middle names. Arete is awesome, but only as a middle name.
