Hi there. I am picking up a Pally I left years ago at level 30. I bought dual spec and set him with Holy and Protection, copying builds I found on the internet. I think I want to be Holy in parties, but Protection sounds fun too as a secondary.

Last night I was having a blast and leveled from 30 to 35 as Holy, in about 5 hours' time! I don't know if I am doing it right. Basically, I just experimented with using Exorcism or Holy Shock to pull, then while in melee I would judge or shock whenever they came up. self-heal as needed. I had very few problems - no mana shortages and I was able to handle 2-3 mobs for short periods when needed.

Is this how you would solo, if you were me?

Someone told me in game that at level 40, you wanted to switch to Protection for soloing. Could anyone concisely let me know why, and how you solo with Protection?

What stats should I be looking for, for each? (doesn't seem to be much spell power stuff at my level)

Thanks. I have tried doing my homework, but much of the Pally info on the web seems to be contradictory or outdated.

Also, I previously had worked on Mining/Blacksmithing, but I was thinking of Mining/Herbal or Mining/Skinning just to make money. Are any of the crafted items going to be worth it for me?

Pick whichever spec you want to play as a Paladin. Ret is probably better for solo questing with and Prot is really good for instant queue dungeon grinding on most servers due to the high demand for tanks. Both require Strength for increasing dps and threat potential.

Ret spec you also want Crit (agility at lower levels might be more common). Prot you want avoidance (dodge and parry) and armor when you can get your hands on it. Both also require hit and expertise (Ret moreso) as you get higher to maintain a solid string of continuous hits but dont worry too much about these when you level up. "... of the Bear" is a good armor type to lean towards as it gives you some stamina and strength.

Probably not. A lot of people will take 2 gathering professions while levelling up to maximize their income. The rationale is that it is much easier and more efficient to farm your mats when you are at max level.

But honestly it doesn't make a huge difference. I would just do whatever you think will be the most fun. This game is very forgiving.

Thanks for the advice!

I'm only level 42, and I just came back from a multi-year break where the character was level 30, so I don't quite feel comfortable healing or tanking instances yet (esp with weak Green gear).

I'm going to work to learn Holy (and as a secondary Prot) for a little while longer. I don't have much interest in the Ret tree really.

So I need to look for dodge/parry, stamina, armor, hit for Prot, and intellect for Holy. Got it.

Are there any good guides out there for learning Prot/tanking in groups?

Not too much out there right now in the way of guides because 4.0 is relatively new and people are waiting for the dust to settle.

Tanking just basically boils down to taking most of the damage for the group and mitigating more of that damage than anyone else could have. Obviously Hit Points and Armor are extremely important to make you a sponge so its easier for the healer, but the real trick here is threat. Instead of a guide I'll just list some important things to keep in mind from most important down.

  • Righteous Fury is a level 16 Buff that multiplies your threat generation, always have this on whenever tanking for a group.
  • Avenger's Shield hurls your equipped shield at an enemy and lets it bounce twice. For a breif time those struck by the shield cannot cast. Use this when pulling monsters to you especially if they are Mages or Priests that want to stand still and cast.
  • For Paladin tanks, it is important to pick a spot and 'hunker down.' This means grab all the monsters you are intending to fight in your pull, find a good spot and settle in until they are all dead. This allows your team to figure out where to stand to assist you. A flustered tank confuses groups and brings down the DPS and threat control.
  • Hammer of the Righteous is your most important spell once you have your group of monsters. It will hit a target and do a big circle of damage around that target. This allows you to keep all the monsters mad at you. Hammer of the Righteous also generates Holy Power, which Protection uses to either Shield Slam a target or Heal themselves or others with Word of Glory.
  • At your current level, using Word of Glory on yourself to help hold threat is advised, with the exception of boss monsters. Using this heal on yourself nets extra threat with conjunction from Righteous Fury, which essentially guarantees that your healer will not get hit by strays.
  • Lastly, make sure to Judge! Always have a Seal, Aura, and Blessing on. Once you get Seal of Insight I suggest using that for most tanking endeavors (at that level.) Judging is VERY IMPORTANT as it keeps your mana topped off.

  • You sound like a passionate player who's eager to prove himself, so just keep that attitude up and you will excel! Read your spells, old and new, to make sure you know what's in your ******** As protection you will generally have extra mana, so help out the healers after battles by cleansing anyone who's been poisoned/diseased and even throw a heal or two to wounded allies.

    Stay vigilant!!

Nice post tzsjynx. Just one thing...

Vigilance is for Warriors not us Paladins!

Azurean01 dont be too focussed on the tanking stats at level 30. Chances are there may only be one tanking specific item that drops in those early instances so dont be afraid to use anything with agility and stam or strength and stam. As you prgress through the levels the instances will become larger and drops become more and more role specific.

Great post tzsjynx! I am going to go over it in more detail later.

Just to clarify... basically, I don't want to queue up for dungeons as tank (or healer) and not know what I am doing. I have a hunter who's level 80 and the thing I most remember from heroics is that a tank not knowing what he is doing is not a recipe for success!

In some ways I want to just wear my quest gear for now and concentrate on leveling, but I don't want to run into instances at later levels never having been a proper tank before.

With so few groups to be found in vanilla or TBC, I don't really know where to get the experience - so all guides and help documents are worth their weight in diamonds.

Well, I started using prot just to learn the abilities, and soloing as Protection is definitely easy mode. I had no issues soloing as Holy, but with Prot I'm gathering up 2 or 3 mobs and Hammering them all to death! Soloing elite quest mobs is fairly trivial too, I just make sure I carefully clear any possible adds.

All the advice has been a great help, I've gotten my pally from naked at level 30 to level 65 in 7 days. I only wish the Outland content was as much fun as the NeoVanilla content!
