Yeah, that was extremely disheartening with my initial job search. Every entry-level job wanted 1-4 years experience. How I was supposed to get that, I have no clue.

With magic. Or bluffing.

And yeah, my cousin spent 2 years looking for a job after she got her masters because despite having a masters in psychology and great internships nobody even looked at her twice because she didn't have any experience.

My favorite part is that there was little-to-no tangible reason for demanding field experience for most of these entry-level jobs.

The real reason they demand extensive experience is to A) cut down on the applicant pool and B) reduce the amount of training they have to do, since everyone is overworked.

I've literally never been trained in my current position. My first week they pretty much just showed me my desk, and I've been figuring out the way since then. This is obviously an extreme case, but I'm sure some degree of that is fairly common everywhere, now.

Yeah, there are enough people looking for jobs that they can just take the easy way. And it's also that people just don't give much of a crap about your education.

Yup. You need to have the degree, because it's another easy way to filter down applications, but that's about all.

I'm going to look for positions where they're going to care more about your writing skill than what's on your resume, and focus on sending solid cover letters.

FTFY.

Also, I am completely falling in love with Baroness again as well as John Baizley's amazing art.

Well what did you expect, he's a professional.

Although I guess if you're not into metal you probably aren't all that likely to have come across more of his work since he mainly works for relatively small metal bands, and he's Baroness' frontman of course.

I don't follow any visual artists that I can think of. I don't connect well with it.

I can certainly enjoy it, and I have a ton of respect for the artists. I just don't often get much of an emotional response from it.

Sure, but it's usually in a fairly superficial capacity. I'm not going to connect to it like I would other mediums (e.g., something written).

Also, it's very difficult for me to understand how someone else could not connect with visual art. Especially something more shocking like James Nachtwey photos. Looking at that photo is like being punched in the gut for me and it keeps me busy for hours.

Nope. I certainly appreciate their skill, and what their work has meant to the world But I don't really have much of an emotional reaction otherwise.

[EDIT]
It's worth noting I have the same reaction to film - I don't typically notice the art direction unless it's superb and noteworthy for some other reason. And when I do, I appreciate it in the context of the plot, not generally for its own value.

There are exceptions to every rule, of course. I can think of some images that gave me emotional reactions. But most of those that are coming to mind are ones that already had immense emotional context around them. I'm also having trouble coming up with examples that didn't include words or signage, so I feel like that's cheating.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is coming to mind as a film where I definitely appreciated the art direction. Lars and the Real Girl is another. I'm having trouble thinking beyond that, though.

I am generally sensitive to expressions/body language in film, though. I've honestly never thought about whether or not that held true with still art.

Have you ever seen one up close? Especially Monet and Van Gogh paintings I could just stare at in wonder for hours.

Yup. Starry Night, and more, are housed in MOMA in Brooklyn. The Met has a ton of Monets, including quite a few examples of his water lilies.

They're up there in terms of my favorite paintings, but I still have trouble really envisioning them. But I've also found that I generally have trouble thinking with imagery. Even when I'm reading, I don't necessarily see anything in my mind. Actually, in general, I don't at all. If something's getting a lot of description, I might try and stop to envision it, but it's something I have to think to do - not an automatic response.

It's not a lie if it's true.
