Q's About My Lowbie Rogue...Follow

Decided to roll a rogue and level it with my brother, who in turn decided to roll a mage. We started the other day, at this point, we're finishing the Barrens and approaching 20.

1. I notice that my hits are missing my target more often than I'd like. In addition, it seems like the mobs are dodging more than I thought they would. My brother says this is the way it is for lowbie rogues until I start accumulating some +hit gear. - but when should I expect that? I think it might be a gear check for me... but, either way: any thoughts? (I'm talking about even-level mobs, or mobs within two levels of me.)

2. How good is the mage / rogue combo? My bro was thinking about switching over to his hunter when we get to 35ish. (Neither one of us want to be a healer - he has a 70 holy priest, and I have a 70 resto shaman). As far as these two classes are concerned - and specifically in a grouping / leveling scenario - are we going to love the insane DPS, or get frustrated with our one-sided capabilities?

3. From my perspective while playing and leveling my shaman, I always envied the rogue class, and wish I could do the single-target DPS which that class can do... however I talked to my arena partner who said that leveling w/ a rogue was a pain in the @$$ because of adds and other issues... simply: how is leveling with a rogue? Either way, I'll stick with the class, I like being a sneaky bastid.

That's it for now. Long day at work - wouldn't mind some discussion!

1. Makes no sense to me if they are the same level, but if they're higher level, they're dodge, parry, and blocking all goes up.

2. The mage and rogue combo is disgusting. My friend is a fire mage and i am a assassin spec rogue. The CC and the damage hits so hard we don't even need a healer, worse comes to worse, he'll poly/ i blind, and we bandage. The other day (us both being lvl 60's, absolutly destroyed two 64's. Just ahhnilated them. The fire mage damage and the rogue damage is rather unstoppable

3. Personally, i despised leveling my rogue (first class too) up to lvl 35-40. I just hated it. It got better though later on, although i heard combat is a fantastic class for leveling. I tried it for the first time just yesterday, and i can see why it owns leveling. I personally would rather do assassin for any pvp, but this spec seems to be hurting everyone except the warriors

1. Like the poster above me, the level of the mob matters. Also, did you switch weapons as weapon skill also matters. If you are comparing the hit/parries w/e to your mage buddy, of course it will be lower because that's just the way it is.

2. Yep, a mage/rogue combo is excellent. Poly/blind and the massive DPS is insane in most situations. However, a hunter would be a lot better. The pet can tank. You can still have massive DPS and freezing traps are still great CCers. As for groups, your buddy might find it easier to get into some as a mage/hunter is more helpful in groups. I'm not saying that you won't get into some, but just have a harder time. I have been turned down from a group many times because they would much rather have a mage.

3. Leveling a rogue is REALLY fun. I have a 70 rogue and trying to make an alt. No other class, in my opinion, has the intensity of a rogue. Also, quests are so easy as you can stealth in, get w/e, kill w/e and get out without much hassle whereas other classes have to fight their way in and it takes so much longer...

When first getting dual wield, yes, it will be a pain in the **** to hit mobs. It's not as satisfying to grind when a good deal of your swings doesn't even hit, but that's the deal for lowbie rogues. You have a 24% chance to miss on even-leveled mobs, but even taken that into consideration, we do sick dps and always top the charts (given you are combat specced).

I have leveled two rogues past lvl 50 now, and my solution to the hit problem was to grind on green mobs. Your effeciency will increase dramatically because downtime goes down too, but it requires you to always stay "ahead" of your zone, level-wise. The first hit gear you are gonna get your hands on comes relatively late in the game. Blackstone ring from Mara (req. lvl 49) and Rune of the Guard Captain quest reward trinket from Hinterlands (lvl 50'ish) is probably gonna be your first +hit pieces.

Seeing as most classes can solo all of azeroth (not counting instances) without a problem, any duo will do. Questing and leveling casually doesn't really require a healer anyway, so I don't think you can really get a better combo than mage and rogue. You got yourself an amazing plow team right there bud. Don't let your friend replace his mage with a hunter (unless he really want to). Hunters are BORING and not that useful end-game anyway. They aren't very groupfriendly either. Mage and Rogue is as imba as you get (rogue and tank is also magnificent!).

A combat specced sword rogue is the fastest leveler out there, assuming you are decently/optimally geared (I believe so, as you got a main to send you some $$$).

I find leveling a rogue to be very easy and very efficient, just make sure you got a MH with high/highest top-end damage at all times for your level, and that you pack a lot of stamina too. Powerleveling first aid will also help you tremendously. Having heavy mageweave bandages at lvl 20 and Netherweave bandages at lvl 36 is just awesome. Keep the highest rank of instant poison on BOTH weapons at all times and it should be smooth sailing. If you enjoy running instances there is a ton of good BoP rare rogue gear to get, so you don't burn your pockets on expensive epics on the AH just to get to a decent level of potency. (like you tend to do with warriors/pallies/shammies/etc).

Go crawl back in your noobhole prz. Just because huntards exist doesn't mean the class is a complete wash, and some bosses would be near impossible without their unique abilities.

Well, then I'd like to direct you to the kindergarden while we are at it... Sheesh, kids nowaydays

FYI I played a hunter to 62 and got incredibly bored many times along the way. Yea, hunters have their place if used correctly, but comes no where near the utility that the mage has. Anyways, it's a personal preference, but I would play a mage ANY DAY over a hunter, and if I were to assemble a group for an instance I'd pick mage > hunter as well.

A hunter who knows how to trap properly is just as useful as a mage. Besides, have you ever seen a mage try to offtank? It's hard on the mana, and usually leaves them as a smear on the ground.

CC = Crowd Control, like Sap and Polymorph.
