I'm pretty sure I know the answer already, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Which would you prefer in any given slot (doesn't matter the slot, we're not worrying about gem bonuses, they're weak), Potent Noble Topaz (+4 spell crit and +5 damage) or Runed Living Ruby (+9 damage)? More to the point, at what +damage level does the Topaz becomes more valuable than the Ruby?
My quick fudge calculation tells me that for where I am (~+720 or so) the topaz's crit only adds the equivalent of about 3 damage or so, which puts it just slightly below the ruby (remember, fudge calculation completely in my head). BUT, when I get my Spellfire Robe and that kicks up another 30 or so points of damage, does the power flip ever so slightly to the topaz? It sure would be nice to get a little extra mana kick out of MoE anyway.

I usually go for the Topaz as I see them as both damage and mana return(and thus as a very very good thing).
Not to mention that I love getting crits.

Not always, but it is indeed a great gem.
It all depends on your current hit rating. If you're capped(some mages are, most aren't, I'm currently not), then it does little for you.
