+Shadow Dmg vs. +Spell DmgFollow

#1 May 31 2007 at 11:12 AM Rating: Decent
Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I was unable to find a post on it.

As an affliction lock (41/0/20) that primarily uses shadow spells, I don't quite get how an item with +Shadow is better than one with the same amount of +Spell Damage. It would seem to me that whenever I use a fire spell, that I am just missing out on that damage.

So, as an example, is a Tome with +40 Shadow Damage better for me than a Tome with +40 Spell Damage? Or does +shadow only help where it is X% higher than a similar Spell Damage item?

Thanks for your help on this noobish question.

well the deal is..... Usualy if two items of of the same "Level" the one with the more restrictive rules is larger than the general.......

For example
if i find a off hand item that requires level 58, and it had a general bonus to damage and healing of say 25, a more restricive item would have say 45. My numbers are not exact or even based off of anything, if you see two items that have the same number but one is general and one is spific, the likely hood is that they are diffrent level items(the genral would be higher level, and have more requirements) the other possiblity is that the item with the more spific bonus may come with other bonuses, like stats.

Capitolg is correct, but if for some reason you have a choice between two items with 40 spell damage vs 40 shadow, then get the spell damage as like you said, it will affect the fire spells as well.

I believe that shadow damage help's your pet's health and damange, where plus damage does not. Dark Pact/Ruin Build 4 life.

In the case that you stated, the difference is that +Spell damage affects your fire spells as well as your shadow spells, so +Spell Damage is better.

However, the real truth is that for items of the same level, "Of Shadow Wrath" provides much more damage that those items that only provide +Spell Damage. Would you rather have a tome that gives +40 Spell Damage, or a tome Of Shadow Wrath that provides +60 shadow damage?

It depends. If you use an imp, his spells are fire based.

I have been stacking shadow damage lately, thought I am demo. I farm a lot and anything that isnt tough elite goes down fast so I dont use CoA anymore but CoS. Casting Immolate lasts as casting SB and I find 3k SB more useful on trash mobs.

CoS, eventually Corr, SB..... mob is down. If its still lingering Shadowburn will finish him for sure.
Therefore I find +shadow damage justified for me. If I was fan of Immolate and Incinerate it would be different I guess.
I do not neglect +spell tho, but if I find item with more +shadow damage than my present +spell one I will got for it.
Jaedenfire Gloves of Annihilation for example, I just replaced my old ones with +20 spell damage.

Hey is there an addon that calculates shadow damage?

For example:
robe of oblivion, +40 spell damage
frozen shadoweave robe, +72 shadow damage

I went shadoweave there. If they were both +72 dmg, clearly the generic spell damage would be better. But since I mainly use shadow, I'll take the extra shadow damage and gimp my fire a little.

Currently my base spell power is 672 and my base shadow is 902 (kinda deceiving because in my normal gear it's about 150 points higher for both). As you get on later in levels you'll find a huge disparity between your base spell power and your specific elemental power. It's just a matter of being able to maximize your efforts.

All pets get a damage increase based on the master's attack or spell power. I don't believe the Imp's Firebolts get an additional boost from spell power, though.
