Noob question about Felguard mobsFollow

Hi everyone, I'm a 30 mage, so you'll have to forgive my lock-related naivete.

Yesterday I was on Felfire Hill in Ashenvale, killing random demons for a quest, and I was seeing some really strange damamge on the Roaming Felguards. My pyroblast, which should be doing 255-327 damage, would usually hit in the neighborhood of 200, but more than a few times I'd see less than 100 damage. This trend seemed pretty constant for Fireball (I had a crit for 75 once), but not for Scorch or Fire Blast.

My questions are as follows: Do felguards have fire resistance, or do they just have preposterous amounts of armor? If it is fire resistance, how were they resisting some of the damage? Wouldn't I just see "Resist" more often than usual?

Thanks for reading, I look forward to getting this figured out.

Armor wont help vs magic damage.

Resists are a tricky gambit, the first thing to keep in mind that Resist is not a all or nothing type of deal, sure sometimes you have a complete resist, and the target takes Zero Damage, but partial resists are possible as well.

To get all the scoop on what is happening i recomed you split your chat window and your Combat log, that way you can see them both. The Combat log is where the games real gravey is happening. You can check to see what happened with each shot, like how much if any was resisted....

As for the base question, unforutnaly I dont think anybody can awnser that. mobs change with level, and a lock can not summon a felguard untill level 50. So no lock could tell you the stats of their pet at any level before that.
