I doubt I am the first to notice this, but seriously huge for Karazhan attuned Hunters.
The Crone, one of three possible bosses in the Opera Event from Karazhan, formerly dropped this item:

A nice 2H axe with the stats:
295-444 dmg 3.5 atk speed
+40 Stamina
+36 Intellect
Equip: 72 attack power
Equip: 7 mana per 5 sec
A pretty decent axe for a MM hunter with a small mana pool/long boss fight. Sonic Spear probably still better for most fights.

If that doesn't get your panties in a twist, socks in a bunch, or yourself generally excited, go roll a rogue.
I can't imagine a better weapon for a hunter. Useful in PvE and definately useful in PvP being only 4 Stamina shy of the Arena 2H axe and Polearms. If you're hit rating is good already, this has to be an instant upgrade to Sonic Spear. Personally, I would drop my hard-won Hellforged Halberd in a heartbeat.

The problem is, as you said, this used to be a weapon you use for those fights when you need a bigger mana pool. Now, you drop 36 intellect on it to pick up 1 MP/5. So for that useful aspect of it, it looks like it's nerfed.
version 1 was better imo.
The only reason I can see for preferring the first over the new and *improved* version is being a MM hunter and relying upon the Intellect from the old...

no, it is now an improved version of the hippy axe, its not that good.
and i prefer 540 mp and ~17 ap over 460 hp, 1 mp5 and 8 ap...
i've got enough hp (7.7k) i'd rather have more mana then more hp.

So therefore you are a MM hunter...
My statement that you quoted would seem to say exactly why you prefer the old version.
If that is the case, why are you even using a two handed weapon? You could dual wield two items with +30 intellect enchants and get 24 more intellect and whatever MM bonuses you get in attack power.
We could go 'round and 'round on this, or we could agree that the weapon is better for specific types of hunters than others.
i am currently MM, but have also been Sv and BM, i still prefer version 1.
and especially as Sv i dont need an extra ~500 hp when i already have well over 8k and receive 4% less dmg.
Int > HP unless you PvP.
thus, this is a great weapon for PvP. but version 1 is better for PvE if you ask me.
