I've noticed that as I level my hunter and pets, they want higher-level food or more lower-level food to stay happy. If, for example, my pet dies, I revive him, and he's merely content - not happy. I happen to have a few mystery meats on hand, so I feed him those until he's happy, which takes maybe 4 or 5 (not necessarily mystery meat, but something lower-leveled), whereas he probably only needs one of the current highest food availabe for my level.

My question, then, is this: has anyone ever figured out what the most cost-effective food is for your pet? I know there are a lot of world food drops (making spending a lot on food unnecessary), and pack space is an issue, but if, hypothetically, pack space was not an issue, would it be cheaper to buy the cheap food and feed a lot until your pet is happy, or to feed just one of the higher-level food?

A pointless question, I know, but I thought I'd ask it in case anyone has any interesting insights.

Feed your pet the food for its current level. Feed it once, wait for the effect to end. Keep doing this until your pet is happy and no longer hungry.

Food will still work for your pet up to 15 levels under the pet's level. So, if you're pet is level 45 (for example), then level 45 food will work fine until your pet hits level 60. After that, it will begin to satisfy your pet less and less over each level from there.

Look at what food is best for your pet and stick with that. You'll have to carry less and your pet will be happy much faster and easier.

When I get a new pet, I work out the just buy a few stacks of food that they eat in the level bracket below (eg, for a level 45 pet I feed level 35 items, gives 35 happiness per tick till lvl 50).

Time is also a factor. Open your combat log when you feed your pet, and you'll see the Happiness gain. The right level of food should give 35 Happiness per second for 8 seconds. Do this until it says 0 gained (that means it's maxed out).

If you use lower level foods, it only gives 17... lower than that would be 8, and he'll refuse to eat anything worse.

So... you could feed your pet one piece of good food for 8 seconds... or you can feed him two shoddy pieces for 16 seconds, or 4 bad pieces for 32 seconds. Not only does it take longer to feed that way, but their Happiness decreases faster, meaning you have to feed again sooner.
