I just got lvl 10 and am looking for a solid talent proggresion. Ive been told to go full Retribution till around 40 and then to respec to prot to aoe grind. If anyone could help out with talent placement that would be awesome. Thanks

I am leveling a Paladin myself, and THIS is pretty much what I am looking at for level 40. At tier 3, I immediately took Seal of Command, and I don't regret it one bit. With a good slow two-hander, I procc it so often it is ridiculous. Just make sure to start the fight by judging the enemy with Crusader first.

Then I took the 8% runspeed talent. After that I started on the Conviction talent. Improved Retribution looks to me like a Rogue killer, to be honest, and using Retribution, judging Crusader, and Consecration, you should be able to take out most mob packs quite easily.

OK first off, play the style you want. AoE and Ret Spec have their own advantages and disadvantages. The caveat to that is play the style you want but understand what's probably going to be going on in group and instance dynamics.

That said. Going Ret to at least 40 is probably a fine idea. Now... Tommyguns may disagree, but until 40 (and likely ever) it's unlikely that you're really going to be a desirable DPS machine for instances. If you don't plan to instance, fine. Disregard the following. But if you want to get into instances you're probably going to need to either tank or heal or both fairly well. However that doesn't mean you need to spec for that yet.

I healed and tanked with ret spec to ZF (with appropriate gear - HAVE 3 sets of gear! Heal, Tank and Solo. You don't have to get it now but always keep it in mind and build it up. Some pieces will share but by about lvl 30 you should have some pieces of distinct gear for each situation). I was 48 when I respecced. It just became too hard to do either.

My ret spec, as a total noob was this.

It worked but I don't recommend it. Knowing what I know now (and having changes in the talent trees which is why it only shows lvl 44 instead of 48) I would probably go something more like this

Granted I'm so not in the ret mindset but others may be... but the imp Sanctity Aura will help you if you need to heal an instance. You have little points in holy (except those that will help you survive with the high chance of no lost casting time when people are beating on you) so if you need to heal an instance - options are good - you get a bit of help there. But that's getting nerfed next patch so I'm not sure if that's where you ultimately want to go.

At 48 or post 48... well that depends, after 48 levels of trying out all the roles of a paladin, what do you want to do? I went PvE instance/solo spec. Prot holy to allow me to lvl and yet let me MH or MT instances. Gaudian suggested this and I added on to it until 65. The PvP folks can probably help you more if you're after that.

My current build is a little more jacked up than I want it to be and you're a ways off from that anyway. This should give you a start.

And as mentioned above, I highly recommend a hybrid spec especially mid lvls when you come into your own so you can decide from experinece, not from what we tell you, what you want to spec for at 65.

Much better to have you say "Is this build OK for doing X at 65" than "OK so how should I spec at 65".

Everything Celcio said is solid advice. Just a few things to add:

Contrary to what you've been told, most people don't Ret to 40 and then Prot. When purely grinding/leveling, most people will stay Retribution as long as they feel they can get away with it, all the way up to 70 if possible. However, outside of a guild or normal group, as Celcio said, it's rare you'll actually be called upon to DPS. PUG's will, 99% of the time, recruit you for healing or tanking.

Healing while Ret-specced is perfectly plausible, and I agree with Celcio that you should keep an extra set of full healing gear on you at all times.

Tanking while not Prot-specced is a little more difficult. A non-Prot Pally tank is much like a non-Feral Druid tank; even at the top of your game you're still going to be gimped. It's do-able, but the DPS will have to hold back much more, and let's just hope you have some prime tanking gear so the healer won't have to go too nuts. And that's assuming everyone in your party isn't a moron and actually knows how to work with a tank... If you have to wressle them for aggro then it's just over.

Also, if you do want to respec Prot, you can do so as early as level 34 when it's possible to have Reckoning maxed. That's all you really need. Holy... again, it depends on who you run with. Generally I would wait until 40 or 50 to respec Holy.
