I'm just curious - what gender do you refer to your pet as? I know it's not specified, but I always refer to my pets as males.

I'm female in real life, and I have a female hunter. I've noticed that a lot of people will refer to their pet as the opposite gender as their character.

Is there a general pattern to the real-life-gender / toon-gender / pet-gender mix?

(for the highly enjoyable book that got me thinking about this, read Golden Compass)

:) Thanks for indulging my mental meanderings!

In my case, I always refer to Karil as a he.

My other pets have been shes, though. Not sure why.

undead north of the harbor in the wetlands turn you into a zombie, if you get them to do that with your pet, you can see what gender it is.

never bothered to do that though =P
i refer to my wolf as male, and my carrion bird as female.

I've not really thought about it. My wyvern in FFXI was female, but I picked her name from a list. My WoW pets I named myself, and have usually given them male-sounding names. Although my new Owl "Swoop" could be either I guess as it's not a particularly masculine, or feminine name.

For the purposes of your research. I'm male in real life, and so is my hunter toon.

How does it being a zombie help?

While that sounds interesting, I shudder to think how up-close-and-personal you'd have to get to figure that out. Not to mention the double ick factor of half rotten zombie parts.

Eeew.

Though I suppose if I'm ever in a morbidly humorous mood, I could get lots of hunters together and extend the experiment, maybe see how many people guessed correctly. Then see how many people change their habitual pattern if they were wrong.

And I wonder, if people really feel the best-friend bond with their pets, if they would have a similar reaction to the stereotypical shock/unease/wary acceptance that real life friends go through when one of their buddies drops a bombshell like that.

I am rather constantly amazed at the potential for anthropological studies in this game.

I think I think too much.

male and female zombies, its a debuff they can cast.
makes you (or your pet) look like an undead for 2 minutes i think.
and its the only way in the game to find out what gender your pet is as far as i know...

so if you really want to know. go there and let your pet pull (1 growl, as a lvl 70 pet can kill a lvl 23-28 a bit to easy) and keep the mob hitting your pet until it gets the debuff.
heal pet if needed.

edit: these are the undead.

Ohh I thought it made your pet into an undead owl, or bear or whatever.

Well I was bored so I decided to go take a looksee. I have now found out Swoop is female.

thinking of doing the same, and trying to kill the big dragon in the eastern wetlands.

edit: maybe i'll try to kite the dragon into Ironforge/Stormwind...

I always forget about the zombie thing. Yeah, mine's a male *remembers wondering why an undead dude was chasing him through the water*

My feed-o-matic always makes that decision for me now, but before I got that addon my pets were male. As one of the above posters wrote it's probably cause I'm a female.

Funny thread, made me stop and think for a second.

I refer to most of my pets as "he", but not all of them. The turtle, the hyena and the worg are/were male in my head. The spider, scorpid, and the cat were all female to me....it's possible I have some unexamined issues with women.

I'm male and I refer to all of my pets as male. If I tamed a female beast, however, like a Stranglethorn Tigress or Razormaw Matriarch, I would consider them female.

For me it depends on the specific pet. Right now my main pet is a wind serpent. For whatever reason I see it as a female and have thus given it a female name. Generally cats I see as female as well. Boars and wolves I have always seen as male. I think alot of it depends on the particular skin of the pet, and of course your own personal views.

I've had gorilla called Moses for some time.
I think I'll get a felwolf. They seem to be rough enough for my taste.

My pets tend to get smacked pretty badly.

Since I don't maltreat my lady, and I've somewhat oldfashioned way to treat her, I tend to think my pets are males.

To my eyes Parsley (that's my character) seems to be that kind of a dwarf I wouldn't let take care of any cute, furry or female "bodies" that have soul (or have lost it).

I think I'll name my masculin felwolf "Rhubarb"

Humar is Male. His mane and the title Pridelord kinda gives that away by itself. All flying pets seem to me as being female, for some reason. All Gorillas male, and Scorpids goes either way for me.

I refer to my owl as a female, gave her a female name, but I think of my wolf as male. My toon is femme and so am I.

It turned out that MrPigilito was a girl, so now I will have to train another boar so that my pet will have an appropriate name. BTW tried the trick on my lock, turns out my succubus is a guy (yuck, I have a cross dressing minion).

Female toon. Bright yellow boar with the non-gender specific name of 'Squee' whom I consider male. As well, I had a tamed red raptor whom I also considered male.

Could it be that the debuff changes you into a zombie of the opposite gender instead? Have anyone tested this out?

Side note: I havent had any problems with my pets gender since I talk mostly finnish on Wow. There are no feminins or maskulins in finnish.

There is a way to tell something's gender w/out going to Wetlands - and as noted - that may not be 100% reliable - as Succubi get turned into males!

Just as %t returns your target, there are many other such commands, so you can write a macro to say: "TankName points to %t and lets everyone know he's going to taunt ___ (his/her) sorry butt!"

I *think* there is a command, much like the %t command, that uses the proper his or her - so that your sentence matches your target's sex.

Can't remember for the life of me where to look this up though.

So, let's ask Mr. Google!

AHA!

AHA AHA AHA!

Mr. Google says %s returns target's sex!

(why do I have to do all the heavy lifting around here?)

Iponema I am going to be so pissed if I get home and find out that Shellie, Wendy, and Claudia are all boys.

I've always referred to my pets as female, no matter what I tamed.

Toon is male, but maybe it's because all my pets in real life have been female as well.

Even the Ravager I tamed got the name Quaddie.

*didn't stay with me long however, that was one ugly pet*

I have had numerous pets so far but only kept my Redeemer. She is my Ghost Saber. Loyal to the end. I didn't know that the zombie thing actually depicted the true gender of your pet. I thought it was random. As far as that goes, My Ghost Saber is Female. I always concidered her such. But pets like the Crocolisk, Bear, Turtle, Ravager, Serpent and Boars are all male to me. I always call my Wolf, bird type, Cats Females.

For Purpose of your study I am a legal Male.

Nope. The Debuff is just to make you look like a forsaken. I turned myself into the Zombie and I was still male so. I am pretty sure thats how it works.
