Suppression TalentFollow

#1 May 16 2007 at 8:57 PM Rating: Decent
I have a lv 70 lock with (without intention) 70+ hit rating which increases my chance to hit by like 5% or something. I know there is a 99% cap on hit percentage so I don't need all of that. My question is whether hit rating and the suppression talent affect the same stat. If I reduce my enemies chance to resist is that the same as increasing my chance to hit or should I consider this talent useful on-top of hit rating?

As far as I know, your hit rating is more of a melee talent that reduces the chance you will 'Miss' when attacking a target, where-as with suppression it is to reduce the chance the enemies will 'resist' your spells. It would most likly be better to go for spell penetration over hit rating, unless you plan on being a melee lock, and that wouldnt be the best idea.. lol

Not sure what hit rating he means, but lets assume he means spell hit rating, like what you get from this trinket:

Is spell hit rating similar to the supression talent?

Just to clarify,
Spell Hit Rating - Increases the chance your spells will hit the target.
Hit Rating - Increases the chance your melee attacks will hit the target.

They are two different ratings. So, unless you are melee, you dont need hit rating, you want Spell Hit rating.

EDIT: Sorry, did not address your question Zebug.
I am not 100% sure about that, but Suppression gives a chance your spells will not be resisted, with a spell hit rating, it would most likly be that your spells would be given a higher chance to not Miss the target.

But I dont think I have seen a spell 'Miss' a target before, just resisted, unless it refers to Shadowbolt, Shadowburn, Searing Pain, and the other spells that give burst dmg. I will try to research and give you a clearer explination.

Ok, alittle clarification for you.. got it from wowwiki.

Pages:
http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_hit_rating
http://www.wowwiki.com/Suppression

Suppression indirectly increases your dmg against higher lvl targets that can resist many times. Meaning they have a lower chance to resist your spells.
Spell Hit Rating: +1% spell hit chance increases the base chance for a spell to land against a target by 1%

So, Spell hit rating increases the chance for a spell to land on your target, while suppression indirectly increases your dmg, by lowering the resist chance of your DOT's (mostly affects DOT's).

Hope that helps, or clears it up alittle bit.

Keep in mind that the reason youve never seen a spell "miss" a target is because the programmers at blizz felt that a "miss" went against the idea of magic spells.

So what they did was made is so that if you miss with a spell, rather than it saying "miss" it will report a "resist". So sometimes when you see a resist, you actually just missed and the mob/player never even had to bother trying to resist.

To answer the OPs question: as far as I understand it - spell hit affects the chance that your spell lands on the target. If you miss, it will report a resist - spell hit will help to alleviate those "resists".

Suppression goes into effect after a spell lands on a target. After a hit, the target rolls to resist and this will either result in damage (a failed resist roll), or a resist. Suppression helps to reduce their chance to truely RESIST the spell. (Basically suppression is functionally the same as spell penetration)

So yes, stacking them can help. Although at L70 having both can be a bit of a loss-leader, I would reccomend if youre doing PvE to max out suppression, and not really worry too much about spell hit. If your doing Arena, I would probably only put 2 or 3 points in suppression and go for some extra spell hit.

Just my 2 cents - and I've been known to be wrong in the past. =)
