Silencing Shot QuestionFollow

#1 May 16 2007 at 9:05 AM Rating: Default
I have been putting this off for some time, but I just can not figure out if it is worth it. I have respeced so much I would hate to put even one TP into something I dont think I will use. Can anyone give me info on this beyond the description and common sence. What kinda damage can I expect from it? Does the silence effect non-casters as well(keep them from using their skills)?

I think it affects some skills, but not all, I'm not really sure. But silencing shot isn't about damage, just like freezing trap isn't. It's about keeping the enemy from doing things. Think about it this way: a priest's greater heal can heal for roughly 2200 before +heal. If the target priest has 1000 +heal, then it will do approximately 3000 healing. So we are assuming 1000 health per second. Silence the priest, and that decreases the healing by 1000 HPS, sort of like doing 1000 DPS for 3 seconds. It's a utility, not a damage thing.

Also, aborting that Pyroblast is always delightful.
But remember, this is purely a PvP talent. Of course, a few mobs will be susceptible to this, but mostly this won't be more than a PvP shot. Damn good PvP shot, but still, only for PvP.

Edit:
I do know it affects other skills as well. I was hit with this in Arathi Valley once, and most of my actionbar went red. I can't really confirm what skills it affects, because I was dead soon after.

My plans was to pick this up. I was going to apply what I call the "condom rule", better to have and not need than to need and not have. :) My question about damage wasnt a determining factor, I was just curious how much 50% Weapon Damage was. How do I calculate it? I do have an additional question concering the silence effect. Does it interupt spells being cast, i.e. Priest/Pally healing themself or Pyroblast from a Mage? Also, will it go through Pally Bubble to interrupt healing? I know I have tried Arcant Torrent against Pally Healing while bubble was up, but they have been uneffected it seemed.

Yes, it interrupts all casts, silences accordingly. Which is why this is so insane for PvP. It will not go through a Paladin Bubble, but nothing does, so no surprise there. Just Bandage while he is bubbled, and you should be on equal terms again.

Can't really tell ya how the math works, but 50% sounds to me like it does half the damage a normal shot would make. It is instant as well, so an Aimed shot followed immediately by Arcane and Multishot with this on the heels should be a hefty chunk of HP out of anyones health pool.

I use this talent quite often in PvE and PvP. When in either environment I tend to watch the enemy castbar. If I notice that a mob starts casting a heal spell I will usually launch a silencing shot to interrupt the casting. Usually the 3 seconds gives me enough time to pile on the last bit of damage and drop the mob before it can attempt to heal again. I also find a fair deal of utility in pulling 5 man instances. You know those pesky casting mobs that always have to be LOS pulled to get them to run to the group? Well with silencing shot they will immediately try to close with you rather than stand there and cast. In the PvP environment I tend to use it to interrupt crucial castings such as that last desperate heal or a mage who is about to toss a 3k fireball my way. The place where the use of this shot really falls off is in the Raiding environment as the majority of mobs encountered will be immune to this ability as are the bosses.

Our pleasure, but that rateup will have to wait until the day you earn your own scholar. Enjoy your Hunter.

I haven't really used it much in PvP yet, but I LOOOOVE the skill in 5 mans. I can't believe that only one other person even mentioned that it pulls casters! It's amazing for pulling those pesky casters away from pats.

I can't even count how many times I've in Hellfire and Coilfang. I'd feel empty and useless without it.

Edit: Not useless, but less useful :P
