Have fun losing to other competent raiding rogues on the damage meters.

Edit:

To actually contribute something...

Do either both itemizations are fine, you can DPS with both, I would personally go with swords but maybe after the next patch I would take daggers, both have their ups and downs.

Swords tend to have better aggro management and ease of use, you lose crit but thats fine since you should be focusing on +hit anyways as a Rogue raiding.

Daggers are fine too, you do more damage with daggers but not by much. Just don't throw a mix like the poster above suggested, its an easy way to nip your DPS.

If you want to PvP, you can do whatever combination you want as long as it fits your build.

I find Swords to be a bad idea in PVP...

You may hit hard, but it's worthless, because there's no way you're going to kill someone with even ~2,500hp (40-40 BG's) QUICKLY just by stun-locking them.

I've got a Bloodrazor w/ Crusader for when I feel like using swords, and even with the 250-450 SS spamming action, the damage just feels WAY too slow to be trying to quickly take someone down in the midst of a huge BG battle.

I find that speccing properly with Ambush-enhancing talents and Cold Blood is a fantastic way to go.

Just like the old 21/8/22 build, you can annihilate people with an Ambush Crit, Backstab Crit, quick Kidney Shot stun, and then another Backstab.

Or if you're feeling qwurky, while they're stunned for just those few seconds, you can use a Thistle Tea, Vanish, and Ambush crit again.

All-in-all, you can't lose with Ambush crits. If you're gear's good, you can take someone down FAST.

There's all kinds of crafty things you can do, like if you DON'T use Deadly Poison, and therefore, they're not DOT'd at all...you can start with the Ambush/Backstab combo, then Blind them, Vanish, and start over....there's no way they'll survive..

bahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Ok, for raiding, you do a weapon spec, dagger/sword/fists/maces...you don't switch up so you get the most out of it.

For PvP you can mix it up, but you have to keep in mind what move you are using the most and equip accordingly to that.

Let's say you aren't raiding OR pvping. My rogue just hit Outlands and I **only** play when he is grouped with my husband's Paladin(ret) and my daughter's mage(frost). I generally go stealth> cheapshot> sin strike to 4 or 5 points> kidney shot> get as many points in before evis as mob is close to death.

I am also currently using swords, but I have 2 Blade of Unquenched Thirsts in my bank(got lucky twice while leveling my druid!), just waiting until I hit 64. However....I am thinking for my situation that swords would be better and I should just sell those daggers. I still do carry a dagger around for those times when you need to ambush(warlock's imp, for example). The first quest reward has a choice between a dagger and a sword and I just can't decide which way would be best to go!

As for my build-I've been basically all over the map. I got Sub up to Prep, Combat up to Blade Flurry and then I've been putting points in Assassn for the +crit and adding combo points. I'm thinking of ditching Prep(and respeccing after the patch of course, since I won't need Imp Sap any longer!) and going over to mostly Combat. I see that most say it's best for PvE, but my PvE doesn't include raiding, so I want to see if that is the best option still. I will miss Prep, but I'll just have to be more careful with my cooldowns! =)

Thanks!

It's a bit obvious but it hasn't been said explicitely, so here it is: some attacks require you to have a dagger equipped in your mainhand (namely ambush and backstab if my memory serves me well). Take this into consideration when choosing your weapon type.

If it's your first character, you've got no stuff and no money and you don't know what you're going to drop. If you've got tons of stuff/money already, you'll be well equipped with whatever type of weapon you choose. In both cases, my advice is to choose a playstyle you like and choose your weapons accordingly (e.g. daggers required if you want to backstab). This is the best way to have fun and level up happily.

I started a rogue and had the same problem choosing. I have improved ambush and backstab but while I was leveling thru the 20s I couldnt find any good daggers. So, I used some weak one and a good off hand sword. I also had a good main hand sword that I would hotkey in after I got my big ambush crit and during the fight if I wanted to gouge and backstab, I'd bickup the dagger and then go back to the more damaging sword. The dagger with sin strike was only critting 70 dam but the sword hit almost 200 dam sometimes.

@Geocacher

Those Blades are actually pretty bad mainhand, general rule is to go with slower, higher damage weapons mainhand since you are using instant strikes.
You rarely should be using Sinister strike with Daggers. If you aren't raiding and tend for party play, try using Mutilate builds and Combat builds, both of which can be found in Nooblestick's sticky at the top of this forum.

ElementHuman,

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't really sure about those daggers, the closer I got to them, the less I liked them. Heh! They look cool, but I'll let someone else buy them who needs "cool" looking gear(heaven knows there are plenty of 'those' out there!). And the money will help me towards my flying mount!

As to the builds, I think I am going to go Combat Swords. I read and reread that sticky. I suppose if I don't like it I can always respec again! Heh!

Thanks again!
