It's all in the build and skill.

I used to go up close and personal on foes all the time. Granted, this was in the golden era of no CloS, but it's still possible to do today.

Besides, if you don't want to be up close, you have tons of tools to get out of close range.

If only I could I would definetly exchange some of the mage's ample spellcasting prowess for some extra close combat ability!

Now, I mean this in the nicest possible way, but this statement of yours here tells me you have NO idea how to play the mage class.

Either that or you're a troll just here to get a rise out of someone.

Well, it ain't gonna work, so neener neener.

I typically don't post on most of these threads, but this one will be an exception to the rule. Are u kidding me " rubbish in close combat " we pwn all with our AoE.
Then merlindalf says " I mean you can kill enemies quickly but thats only if you can get your spells cast" WTF I can picture this guy now trying to get off a pyroblast with a rogue hacking away at him and not even thinking to FN and blink away. Now for the kicker " If only I could I would definetly exchange some of the mage's ample spellcasting prowess for some extra close combat ability!" I don't even know what to say about that statement except your a noob. You shouldn't be playing anything that has the ability to cast a spell. You obviously can't read spell descriptions or comprehend their versatility. Although I can not find the thread " stupid mages give us a bad name " this guys the not only a member he's the freaking president!

reroll a warrior or something that requires less skill to play!

You can actually do that by switching from the comonly fire build to the more defensive frost build. By doing so you get 30% more protection from frost/ice armor, 15% to freeze your target everytime u cast a frost spell or when u get hit,Ice block, Ice barrier, and u still have your regular escape plans like frost nova, polymorph, blink. Add the cold snap and you have all frost abilities effective again, so u can reapply a second frost nova, ice barrier and ice block.

If this wouldn't give u enough time to finish a single enemy or get help if u were facing multiple enemies, then u need to rethink your strategies on how and when u apply certain spells.

Honestly, you are over reacting man. Merlindalf confessed that he is a noob and nothing wrong with that. But you!!! You post nothing useful or even comforting and you sounded like a noob yourself when you wrote:

The diminishing return rule never applied to skill, no matter what class you play.

You are making fun of a noob that can beat your *** in a year once he comes up with his own strategy and if you knew this is the same person you laughed at once, how much respect you have for yourself then?

Point is no need to be rude and this site is created so players can socialize and give helpful advice to each other. I say all this because i was once the biggest NOOB and now ... well i'm not the best, but i get complements all the time pvp and pve.

I'm sorry if u feel i was over reacting. The thread topic and the post irritated me, In his post he never asked for help he was merely ******** about mages and how to change them to make them better by giving them close combat skills.....

@OP

Do not get upset if you die, happens to the best of us (even warlocks die, its true).
Learn what to do that helps your team, you are not going to be of any use chasing HKs while the other team makes a flag capture.

Short casts and instants are made to pvp with.
Use that scorch even if its not talented (1.5 sec cast is gold and it does not travel)
Do not use fireball or frostbolt unless you are out of the firing line, even then it also attracts lots of attention (rogues and druids in stealth) nothing is worse than offering your tender behind to a rogue or a druid while you stand there casting.
Do not underestimate people's twitch reactions and cowardice, if you just got assaulted by one fellow retaliate as long as you got control of yourself.
Scenario
Random warrior hits me.
Me: OUCH, here eat this fire blast. (fireblast takes a nice lil chunk out)
Warrior attempts to whack me again.
Me: frost nova!
Me:cast scorch, fireblast again! cone of cold *laugh at slowed down warrior...

Try to fight with your teammates around you. A healer that heals you cos you saved him from that rogue, the warrior who peels rogues off you. All these people? Help them! They attack something you scorch it. That something comes for you, you root it and watch while they get pummeled to death. Nothing makes people more upset than a mage bomb who is allowed to all that AoE damage before he is finally killed.

Learn how to run from a bad situation, there are times when you need to go on a suicide mission (burn all your mana through AoE then die).

You will only learn all that by actually pvping more. No point complaining that you cannot do anything when a melee is all over you cos that is the point melee will dominate casters. You got tools to migiate that threat use them well. Or better yet watch how other mages play in BGs.

Some other helpful info. While waiting to get rezzed at the gy, think to yourself about the last fight. What spells were you casting? What spells could you have cast if you were given a little more time. What about other spells (out of your primary tree and such). I have found that this self-reflection usually reveals an 'ah hah!' moment. Also, follow around another mage and watch what they do in a bg. Sometimes it is unavoidable to die as a mage in a bg, which is when I say... if I'm going to die, then I'm taking some significant chunks of health with me. ;-)

Hang in there, try some friendly duels for practice, and remember that battlegrounds are teeming with hardcore guys who spend lots of gold making their chars the absolute best they can be. Not only do they have a tremendous advantage in gear, but they're often times highly skilled players in addition. Not to mention you'll often encounter them as a well-organized team. Unless you're set gear-wise and know how to play your class and have good teammates, it's going to be hard to find pvp satisfaction playing any class--at least in BG's.

In the spectrum of noob to twink, I'm usually around the middle as far as gear and skill goes, and I have plenty of awful days, along with some ok and even a few good days where I'm not towards the bottom of the dmg charts and the top of the deaths. It can also make a difference what level bracket you're in as well as what BG you play in.

My point in all of this--stick with it, try a few different toons here and there (helps you to learn their strengths and weaknesses), and try again the next time you hit level _9 and see what you think.

Most excellent post! Rate up for you. It is also very nice to see someone who doesn't: 'always top the damage charts', or 'always has the most HK, Killing Blows, or whatever'.

mages are great in pvp both fire and frost you just need to play it right and than you can get great results sure rogues will most likely top your dps and most likely get more killing blows honestly i dont get top damage even when i was 60 in AV well except for one time but that one had no rogues and i was on O you will be able to kill things fast with fire and make it so they cant touch you with frost do not give up hope for mage pvp the time will come when it all clicks into place.
