1h sword and off hand vs staff?Follow

hi all, i am reasonably new to the squishy likes of the mage, and loving it. but i was wondering your thoughts on the benefit of either using a 1h sword/dagger and offhand, or a staff?

i am currently a fire specced mage at level 40. any thoughts on this would be great!

at low levels you would stick to using staff more. There are some useful daggers and swords out there but that is like towards 50 or something. This is especially true if you do not run instances. There is a SM drop for both the offhand slot and the main hand slot (a dagger if i remember). Staffs are however more readily available if you do not have a better alternative (sta, int will take precedence over any damage stats) then stick to staff of eagle.

having said that, the situation seems to have been reversed in outland, I am looking at lots of caster swords while i see less quality staffs. I guess its just the way we are getting itemnized.

Even since Molten Core, a mage who cared about damage over stats would pick a sword and an offhand instead of a staff. Especially when you could pair said sword with an incredible AV offhand for an intense amount more damage vs the staff.

There are staves that were often picked up due to the incredibleness(most notably, the staff from Nefarian) instead of a 1h + offhand, but I have yet to see a staff(not counting Atiesh) where I wouldn't rather have a 1h + offhand that's available to someone progressed enough to get the staff.

At lower levels (60 or less) you would be better fit for a staff. The stats are much more useful than the small amount of spellpower you would gain with a 1h+OH.

I have found that using Charstone Dirk, http://thotbott.com/i17710 , and Prophetic Cane, http://www.thottbot.com/i6803 , works nicely for me. Before the Charstone Dirk I was using the Hypnotic Blade.
