Question on pickpocketingFollow

#1 May 11 2007 at 11:05 AM Rating: Decent
Hello, I am a 62 rogue and have tried pickpocket on many different mobs (including instance bosses) and have never found anything more than some copper and the occasional lucky trinket or junk box(which has never yielded anything worth mentioning).

I was just wondering if there are any mobs worth pickpocketing? As stated ive never had any luck, and would like to hear your Pickpocketing stories.

Everytime I level, I remember to pickpocket til I get my skill maxed again by virtue of picking the lock on the junkboxes I find. This keeps me fully stocked on blinding powder and healing potions. Every once in awhile, an item will pop up. Personally, I've found several gems and a couple green items. The blinding powder and the potions are the best as they are becoming quite expensive on the AH on my server.

I've never pickpocketed a boss, but I have pickpocketed probably all other mobs and have not noticed a difference in the outcome. I don't think it really makes a difference.

Wow, do you remember what kind of greens?
I like your idea on the skill up after leveling(will start that). One question tho does the level of the target mob determine the level of LP skill required for that junkbox? I remember at one point the boxes I got could not give a skill up but its been a while.

Ive been grinding LPing for a few days now made the mistake of not working on it for 30 levels, yeah bad call. but PPing in ZF I got a few green rings, an amulet, and plenty of gems. made like 50g going from 200-260, which is pretty damn sweet, I AH'd everything that I could to make the gold though those are not typical vendor sales numbers. And yes the mob level does effect what type of box drops, thottbott search of wowhead search 'lockbox' to see what kinds there are and what levels drop them.

Level of the mob determines what loot can be obtained through pickpocket and what junkbox will drop.

Pickpocket is a great way to refill your blinding powder and healing pots at higher levels.

Bottom line, if you're a rogue you should have pickpocket macros set up to auto pickpocket before you do a stealth attack. Here's how to set it up...

  • Make a list of your stealth attacks (i.e. Backstab, Cheap Shot, Garrote, Ambush, Ghostly Strike, etc.) on a piece of paper.
  • Go into the Macros creation window and select the tab for your character so you're not cluttering the main macro area.
  • Create a macro and call it something obvious, like Ambush. Pick the icon that matches the attack so you don't have to get used to a new icon.
  • Create a macro for each stealth attack follows:

  • /cast pick pocket
    /stopcasting
    /cast <attack name>

Attack name would be the name of the stealth attack you want to use. For instance, /cast Ambush would cast the Ambush attack. Note that most two-word attack names are separated by a space; ex: /cast Cheap Shot.

  • Go into Interface Options and set yourself up for Auto Loot (upper right of window) so your pickpockets automatically go to your inventory.
  • Go into stealth mode. Replace the existing stealth attacks with the macros by dragging them to your actionbar.

  • You will now pickpocket a mob before your stealth attack hits. You'll find this keeps your lockpicking skill up (by picking the junkboxes you loot) and it keeps you stocked with blinding powder, which would otherwise be very expensive. The extra money you make from pickpocketing will be evident over time. You're literally getting twice the loot money you normally would otherwise.

    Happy hunting.
