Well im kinda new to the game and my priest is my only character (lvl 24). So far ive put in everything in shadow. I got 130 spirit (+71) from stuff.
So i see alot of people telling me that Shadow priest have really good dps, crits and are good pvp... i cant really say that about my priest though. My highest crit is 183 with mind blast, and my friend who is a 22 hunter (he has a 70 main, so hes not a noob) has his highest crit at 250 something. And i dueled so many people and i think i only won like once to a guy that was like 5 lvls below me. I also lost to my friend hunter...
So i really have no idea what im doing wrong... is it just because im inexperienced?

As far as my experiences go (I'm lvl 51 atm) I did quite a bit of pvp in the 39 and 49 brackets - Priests are awesome (I'm fully shadow). usualy end up top 3 when it comes to killing blows - and can be very high (if not top) in dmg if you just dot everything you see (yeah, I tried - was very clearly at top, although a good lock or something should beat that easy).

Didn't pvp much at lvl 29 - but I think it pretty much gets better in the higher brackets. 1 vs 1 you should be able to have a very high win-rate - at least when you get a bit higher. Meeting similar lvl opposite faction (if pvp server) should go fairly well. A lot comes to skill, I think priest isn't the easiest class to play, but can be very powerfull if you do know your game.

I would recomend going to lvl 37-39 and try pvping again, at least before giving up on the priest - if you have the time. Lvl 40+ I had loads of fun (shadowform + mount).

I don't know how they are at lvl 60-70, but should be fairly good from what a friend of mine said - he mentioned mages and rogues was a bit tough - personally I struggle with Warlocks when they keep you constantly feared.

Just my thoughts,

Things get a bit tricky when you get to 70. Lots of classes have stuff that can ***** you up big time as shadow.

Rogues - Cloak of Shadows, stuns
Hunters - Silence shot (and pet)
Warlocks - Felhound, fear, horrify, shadow protection
Shamans - Purge, grounding totem
Warriors - shield bash, mortal strike

Obviously you can win these encounters, it's just tough. There's no "easy win," though I found mages, druids and pallys easiest to defeat. It takes a lot of patience and plenty of match-ups to learn the best way to PvP with any class. I wouldn't stress too much losing at your level. You've still got a long way to go and lots of practice left ahead.

Getting Shadowform at 40 will help considerably and make you feel more like a true shadow priest.

PVP needs practice. Being experienced will always help.

Maybe you should level to 29 and see how it works out then.

And, since you aren't in Shadow Form yet, heal yourself if you would die otherwise. (If you don't do that already.)

The 29 bracket is hard anyways because of the twinks.

And dueling... well, I win with my priest (against mages and such) by shield - pain - wand - heal if necessary - repeat until opponent is oom, then do spelldmg. But I'm Holy/Disc.

Also, your hunter friend will probably have better gear because he has a high main character.

i leveled my priest up with a rogue and a mage. between the three of us we dueled constantly. vs the mage we where pretty rounded off, but against the rogue i got smashed until i hit 40 and picked up my shadow form. Its hard at lower lvls to win as a priest because you dont have the armour or the health to withstand the often times brutal tactics of the other classes at your lvl. Once you hit shadow form though, you get that 15% damage reduction, and trust me, you notice it. also your spells pick us more damage so they will be crying to their mothers every time you start your DPS. As far as your crits, dont really worry about them. While yes, its nice to be able to say, oh wow i critted for X amount. Dont expect it. You are a priest, your attack spells will not be as strong as many of the other classes. Use your mind flay and your Dots for your primary damage. they are constant source of DPS and once you get rolling, its hard for someone other then yourself to stop you. Mind Blast is your nuke. Use it as such, if you have an openning, blast them, its funny to see them say "OH GOD" because you do a steady stream of damage and then nuke them. also, like it was mentioned earlier. Heal yourself and keep up that shield as much as possible. in your bracket that is pretty much the only way you will stay alive, well that and fear, but its kinda worthless with all the nerfs.

Me personally, my hardest fights are still vs. rogues(though CoS is funny to me, most rogues abuse it and i just take advantage of that) and lock if they get the jump on me. Just about any other class, if you learn how to fight them, you will win 3 out of 4 times.

For the priest, things get better in the level 40-49 bracket, and even better in the level 50-59 bracket. It's a slow start but well worth it as you progress further.

His hunter doesn't have viper sting yet but hunters do... priest can get OOM very quickly.

If you pvp against casters, try to use Mana Burn from time to time. Damages for any mana burned this way.
