Even if I plan on going Affliction, it getting Demonic Embrace and Improved VW a good thing to do after getting Improved Corruption a good idea to help with grinding? Or is trying to go straight for Siphon Life a better idea?

I'm sure both work, but what do you think will make leveling easier?

[edit] Wow, re-reading that made my eyes bleed. Re-write time :P

I'm going Affliction as my build. Would taking Demonic Embrace and Improved VW after I take Improved Corruption, but before I go farther into Afflictgion, make leveling easier?

No, don't waste the points in demo. - stay full affl. Focus your items on +stamina and then +int, with only minor focus on +spirit. This will allow you to have a high hp amount with points to fill out the affl. drain-tanking build. I didn't start filling out demo until after I already reached UA (until I get to 60 to respec).

After reaching low twenties, VW is pretty worthless (I basically just carried him around as a bubble while I dted until I got succi). You can get SO much better skills by sticking with affl.

Put those 8 pts into the following:
2/2 life tap (great mana source)
2/2 soul siphon
1/5 suppresion
3/5 fel concentration (max this out to 5/5 asap).

This will put you on the way to drain-tanking, and you shouldn't have to worry about losing hp (you will be pulling in more hp than their damage takes).

Now not everyone HAS to do drain tanking, which is what you are pointing him to. Imp. VW would be great with a drain hunting style of play, if that would be something interesting to you. Imp. VW makes the VW hold aggro better, which makes drain hunting easier, IMO. Getting which talents early on depends on which playstyle you want to lean towards. If you read 'The Shadow Compendium', you will see a list of playstyles, and how you go about playing with that style, choose which playstyle fits with how you want to play. Try out each style, and then make a choice on which one you like the best.

As I said, Imp. VW shines when you are drain tanking, but in all reality, if you are planning on going Affliction, I wouldnt waste any points early on in the Demo tree. 5/5 Imp. Corruption makes it an insta-cast, then work your way from there.

I'm not saying everyone has to go to pure drain-tanking, but demo really doesn't shine until you get felguard (cookie cutter). By the time you can actually use those 8 pts, your regular dots will do more damage and pull aggro from your vw (with or without imp. vw) - IMO it is best to use those points to filling out something you can actually use later on (unless he 1) wants to pay more for respec and 2) wants to be the weakest lock in pvp/instances). If he decides to go full demo, it would at least make sense, but he isn't.

Now, his specific question was regarding grinding - let's compare:

1) Demo: Imp VW - Assuming it can hold aggro (IMO it can't ~ I used it up until 35's), it's high armor and consume shadows let's it be an amazing soloing tool. Cons: it can die from multiple pulls (your health funnel is low lvl, it can't draw aggro from all pulls, etc), it's worthless in pvp, bg, or instances (bosses require max dps in which case vw<dt), and finally, it will take a long time to kill individual mobs (you have to keep your vw aggro > your dps).

2) Affl: Drain Tanking - Assuming you're half-wise intelligent when buying your items, your defense skill will be maxed, you won't have deminished spirit (already have +hp), you'll be doing more dps, and you'll end each fight with high hp (can be put into mana with life-tap) - all of which will let you be ready for any other mobs in the area; you can also easily outlast multiple pulls (dted lock can take on 3 mobs at lvl, and 1 additional mob per lvl discrepancy). It also lets you easily outlast people in pvp/bg ~ and during instances, you will be able to last when you catch aggro from the boss. Cons: you take more item damage (requires repairs ~ more money spent), low armor means that you have to be careful about pulling certain elites with greater dmg than regular lvled mobs.

When you compare pros to cons, IMO drain-tanking is the best way to go if you're going affliction.
