Hit Rating vs Attack PowerFollow

I've had a friend tell me to shoot for 70 ~ 100 hit rating, and then concentrate on attack power...what is the conventional wisdom here? Is hit rating just for allowing you to hit higher level mobs easier? Seems like attack would be more important unless you were always fighting mobs 3 or 4 levels higher, and while grinding to 70, you don't do that as much...or at least I don't.

For example, something that throws me off....two items (a) +20agility, +30sta + 41 attack power or (b) +18agility, +17 hit rating, +36 attack power.

Anyway, just wondering which of these stats to focus on...to me it seems attack over hit rating over crit rating?

I'm 67 now, so if the opinion changes at 70, just post what you think is best to do at 70, if you don't mind. I appreciate the information.

I may not be a number crunching person, but maybe you can learn from my experience as a hunter and the method to my madness. ^^

IMO, I would prefer AP over +hit. While +hit makes sure more shots connect AP makes all of your shots and melee attacks hit harder. And aside from the fact, +hit doesn't transfer to your pet either. Like all of your stats your ranged attack power is scaled to your pet to help DPS.

And of the two items, I would prefer item (a). Not only does this piece have more agi (1pt=2ac, crit, dodge, RAP), it has a substantial amount of stam and AP. All of these things make you and your pet stronger...this is advice from a BM hunter of course ^^

I would reccomend hit rating to MM hunters, maybe even SM. Simply because MM is all about hitting like a truck and SM is slightly melee-based which hunters aren't all that good at.

At 70..it depends what you're doing at 70. If you're instancing a little hit rating is nice, but don't give up a good piece like (a) because of it. As you progress higher in level you need more +rating to get the same bonus than those who are younger to get the same effect..keep that in mind when choosing your gear. For PvP, I would highly recommend AP, considering people don't dodge that much in my experience.

anywho, I hope my knowledge could be of some use to you. If you go to petopia I'm sure they have some articles around there to help you out.

Thanks for the reply, Luc. I'm trying to do more research here and there to determine the course of action to take, but your logic seems sound to me, and is the choice I would have made too, if not for my buddy suggesting hit over ap until 70+ hit.

According to WoWWiki, it takes 15.8 Hit Rating to equal +1% chance to hit (better expressed as -1% chance to miss, perhaps).

The chance to miss is described here. If your weapon skill is at its maximum, and if you're fighting an equal level opponent, your chance to miss is 5%. So you'll want 79 Hit Rating to eliminate misses, and more to keep them eliminated against Boss mobs.

A miss inflicts zero damage, so it's easy to see that a hit at a lower RAP level for less damage is still inflicting damage, while a miss at any enormous amount of RAP does zero damage. You can crunch the numbers to see how much those 5% misses hurt you, and make your gearing decisions based on that. But remember that there are a few "intangibles" that make +Hit more valuable than just the ability to avoid doing no damage. A Concussive Shot which misses does not slow a MOB. A Tranquilizing Shot which misses does not remove a Frenzy, etc. And any special shot which misses still costs mana and may start a cool down. At the least it wastes a global cool down. These misses can be much more critical than a miss that doesn't apply simple damage.

BTW +1 Agil no longer = 2 AP

1 Agil = 1 AP and RAP for us, as of patch 2.0

1 Agility = 1 RAP.

Pretty sure I don't get any MAP when I stack Agility.

Yup ^^

I said that 1 Agi = 2 Armor (or AC for those of you who play older games)
