Mage Profession - Alchemy vs TailoringFollow

I'm sure this topic has been beat to death elsewhere, but I can't quite seem to find where, but I am having trouble deciding what to have on my mage, tailoring or alchemy.

My mage is only in the middle levels, but I know she'll see 70 at some point, and probably as a fire spec, as thats what I am now, and I like it(though I do plan on trying out frost eventually). What I want to know is: Is the spellfire set (and spellstrike too, I suppose even though that is BoE) worth being the reason I take tailoring?

Her other profession is going to be herbalism no matter what, as I have quite a few alts, and most of them have skinning and mining, and only one other has herbalism. That also means that I'm not too worried about cloth for tailoring if I take that up instead.

I like the idea of being able to make my own potions while I'm out and about, but my other herbalist is also going to be an alchemist. Other than the tailoring sets, would it be more worth it to craft potions/flasks, and have access to the alchemy cooldowns, or the tailoring cloth cooldowns?

Thanks!

At this point, tailoring. I do have a feeling they will buff other professions at some point though.

I did herb/alch with my mage. I don't know if that's a bad choice yet (she's only 55) so far it's served her well but they're sort of nerfing alch in the next patch . I'm not sure how well that's going to work out.

She made some nice coin (loaning my lvl 60+ money at lvl 44) and stacking the elixirs of greater firepower with arcane elixir was fun - but you won't be able to do that after the patch...

Maybe you'll want to wait until that comes out, see what people's reaction to it is then make your choice.

At the moment, Tailoring. The bind on pickup gear you can craft (Spellfire, Frozen Shadoweave, Spellstrike, Battlecast, etc.) is significantly better than anything you can get prior to Tier 5 (Tirisfal Regalia) and very close to T5.

Having said that though, it's a pretty safe assumption that as more content is released (e.g. Black Temple in coming patch with Tier 6, Tempest Regalia) the quality of raid gear will continue to get better and surpass the current best tailored items.

Blizzard may address this by adding new patterns that are closer in quality to new PvE gear, but from what we've seen in the past, this is probably a much lower priority for the developers and eventually the Tailoring profression will become the joke it used to be pre-TBC. Now, as a tailor myself, I hope that Blizz has learned from its mistakes and this will not happen, but I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

Just my 2 cents.

It is true Blizzard has stop developing professions in the past, and they may still do so, but keep in mind this. Back in the good ole' days of Tailoring, you had ONE pattern. The craftable BOP was all any class had going. For the most part, it was almost T2 quality. It was quickly surpassed though.

Now, they offer almost a full set of things to wear, not to mention it being close if not comparable to T5. Then look at how fast progression is being made. Most servers are still fooling around with Gruul and Mag, maybe a guild or two just starting SSC.

By the time SSC becomes common ground, event then the craftables will be comparable. I don't see SSC being easy for a awhile now, so to me it seems people wil definately make good use out of thier craftables, as majority wearing them won't see a replacement for months. And even when it is ready to be replaced, T6 won't be THAT much better, and who knows when people will be geared enough in that to really show an upperhand.
