Question for you end game pallies.Follow

#1 May 05 2007 at 5:55 PM Rating: Decent
I'm thinking of returning to the paladin class. I'm wondering though, if I spec for full prot for endgame (like 0/42/19 or something), would I have trouble getting into raiding guilds? Are paladins still chiefly seen as healbots?

I don't mind if I have to heal on some encounters, but how badly will my healing suffer with no points in prot? I just don't wanna go down the pally route again and be dissappointed at endgame by having my only viable role be flash of light spamming.

From what I've seen, both on Alla and from personal playing, paladins don't have to be healbots for end game. Since we're a support class, we're meant to take up whatever rolls we're needed for, and though we have good talents for a lot of things, we're better off as off-tank, off healer, since that's what we're for. Support.
IMO, the point for having a paladin in the group is to increase overall survivabilityfor the party. We're hard to take out, and have the ability to keep our allies up.
It's important to be able to know when you should be doing something, not from being told, but from seeing the situation and using good judgement. (not the skill)

Like someone else said,
you know you're doing a good job when someone says "Man, we're kicking *** here."

Honestly, it depends on your guild. Mine has seen me both as a prot paladin and as a holy paladin and though I choose to be holy right now, my guild is comfortable with me going prot (they've even helped me farm the gear for it).

Some guilds will force you to spec holy because we are the most powerful and efficient single target healers in the game. Others won't really care as long as you do your job :P

In my guild right now for Karazhan we have all Paladin healers: our Priests are Shadow spec and Druids are Balance. Despite this I am Protection and am in our Karazhan group 1 as second/off tank. As mentioned before, it depends on the guild you are in and/or what the guilds raiding on your server are looking for whether it would be easy or hard to raid as a tankadin. If you're good, people will see that and word will spread (at least it has for me), and that will make things much easier, people knowing that you can indeed tank, not jsut having to take your word for it.

Kinda funny story to illustrate the point a bit: this Mage in my guild was a very staunch believer that Paladins still cannot tank, and never will be able to. His wife convinced him to let me tank for them as they went for their various Karazhan key fragments, and now I'm the first one he asks when they need a tank :P If you can play as a tank, go for it, and people will notice. Hope that helps a bit, gl :D

Yes it totally depends on your guild. You have to decide which is more of a priority; Joining a certain guild or being a certain spec. If you plan on being in among the top guilds on your server then you will spec according to the needs of your guild, not so much what you want to spec. If you are just playing for fun and don't care which guild you're in, then spec the way that is the most fun and don't let people tell you to change.
