Priest or Pally?Follow

#1 May 05 2007 at 12:16 AM Rating: Decent
Ok i maybe asking this in the wrong place, and maybe ill get a few biased answers but here goes! Recently ive been playing as a nelf rogue and orc warrior, and just fancied a change from close up mellee, however i didnt want to lose my fighting skills totally. I just wanted to try a healer for a while!:) My question is this, what would you guys reccommend as a healer? I understand pallys dont really do dps but i presume priests cant either? Also im going horde so waht would race would you reccomend (for priest obviously)? Thanks for your advice in advance!

If you go spec shadow you dont have to hide dps-wise, at least you can out-dps a Paladin.

Both classes heal well, the question is more how you want do to your dmg while questing. You want to use spells or melee attacks.

Well after a rogue and warrior i was thinking of trying a caster type of dmg, so im presuming that shadow spec of priest would be the one to go for?
Also, what race would you reccomend? i was thinking of playing undead?
And one last question how do you guys find soloing a priest? Do you die fairly often or can you hold your own out there? :)

Shadow Priest is fantastic DPS and if you spec right you can solo very easily with very few breaks. Undead is probably the best choice PvP wise while Blood Elves mana tap and arcane torrent are better for PvE.

If you want to be a healer and you are not too worried about dps, then I would suggest a Blood Elf Paladin. You will be able to do decent damage, but you are near impossible to take down. You can still benefit the group with buffs and you do not have to worry as much about getting some aggro and taking a beating as your armor will mitigate alot of damage.

As for Shadow Priests... that is my main character and I rolled a Paladin to create a healer. Shadow Priests offer great utility, but in the higher level instances, particularly Outland, their healing becomes more and more gimped. However, Shadow priests are one of the easiest classes to level and in a full group with a main healer they become one of the best off healers in the game.

What you need to figure out is if you want to play a "healer" or a hybrid. If you want a pure healer I would recommend a paladin as their playstyle will be somewhat use to what you are currently playing as a rogue and warrior. I love prot/holy paladins because you can grind fairly well by pulling multiple mobs and using Righteous Fury / Retribution Aura / BoS / Shield Spike... with that combo and I can take on 5 - 6 Elites on my 40 paladin as long as they are equal or slightly lesser in level. As a shadow priest, until outlands, I could solo any elites that were orange or less with no issues one on one. Both have their advantages... my opinion, play both to level 20 or so and make a decision then.

It's possible. It'll take a while, may have to blow a bubble (and the fight will probably last through the 5 minute cooldown) and pots/bandage as well as heals but yeah that's doable.

As long as they aren't casters.

One other thing to put in is that shadow priests are very mana efficient. Even with spirit tap you get oom pretty often.

I'm confused also =) My shadow priest isn't going OOM really often (ok.. maybe after the 3rd add); I'm wanding a lot, and waiting for Spirit Tap to end before getting an aggro (if possible). This way, I can keep grinding without pause (and I don't have the lvl 50 talent yet).

We all know that SP is the most efficient of the casters.

One thing with spirit tap and holy (that's me):

On the last seconds, cast Holy Fire (3 seconds) and right away SW:P. That way, your spells will have 35% bonus from spirit added to +damage.

let spirit = 350. With spirit tap, spirit=700. With Improved DS and Spiritual Guidance, +damage = 35% of spirit = 245 (+damage).

Spirit tap lasts 15 seconds. Cast HF when you have 4 seconds left, then SW:P. You lose a minimal mana regen but your 2 first spells get more +healing.

I was farming motes of mana in netherstorm. Even with those mobs that burn mana, i only get to drink/eat when my mana and health are 1000-1500. And that's happening every 10-15 mobs. And i'm holy/disc, not shadow.
