PvP - is it too late to learn?Follow

Hi folks

This is going to sound really stupid but my 'lock is now 56 and I have always played PvE and am affliction specced. I have never done any kind of PvP with her or any of my alts.

At 56 is it too late to start? Should I try BG's to start? Or should I start a new 'lock and go from there?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Everyone has to learn sometimes. If you want an intense crash course, go WSG. It is smaller teams and alot of 2 vs 1 in the middle. Also AB has alot of action. AV is very spread out and there is more tactics involved, where as the others are capture the flag and hold a post events. You will refine your skills and see if that is what you want. Never be afraid of trying something new, and as a lock expect to get to know the GY's well because they will target you because of your AoE fears and spells, but you will eventually run up the numbers. BG's are great for getting away from the hectic grind. BG,s are alot of fun, so much in fact the a new game called Warhammer will let you level and get exp from just doing BG's so give it a try, whats the worse that can happen.

As an affliction lock you should do pretty well in bgs. You just need to develop an intuition for which spell order to use in a given situation. If I'm 1v1 vs a war or rogue, I'll either DC fear or DC UA then fear if I have some distance and want to get some damage ticking. Then it's just CoA, Cor, SL and fear again. Since I'm aff spec, when they get to 1/4 I'll usually straight drain life them until their dead. If they stealth again or get me stun locked I'll spam instant HoT, but I try to save it for emergencies.

Against larger groups I try to stay behind the lines with grim reach and dot up single targets at a time. If I see a class being a troublemaker I'll either DC them or fear, and if someone gets into our ranks I pop HoT and start making his life miserable.

One key is to stay mobile. Instant cast spells make it possible to bounce around all over, and during bgs I'm never standing still unless it's for UA or fear. The more you move around the harder it is for that rogue to get in behind you for a sneak attack.

Yes. Very true. When I learned to move in bg/pvp, my death rate probably dropped by about half or more.

There are times when you can stop and get off a shadowbolt or whatever. But you really want to be moving if possible. Any time you are in cooldown, you should be moving. It's not just rogues coming to get you. If you plant yourself like a tree to cast dd's at someone, there could be a hunter lining up an aimed shot at you from afar - a mage ticking down a pyro at you - but if you move before these long-timer attacks go off - meaning you move out of their range - they get an "out of range" message and you don't get hurt. Etc. and so on.

Imp cor is one of the "best" talents there is. You can insta-cast two DoTs w/ that (coa and cor) on many targets.

You need to learn the other classes, what do they do when you do ____. Save your death coil for emergencies if possible - or to finish off or interrupt.

Insta HoT is great for pvp. Learn which classes can click out of fear and which can't (look up battleground trinkets - I think it's hunters, shams and pals who can't click out of fear). Sometimes succubus seduction > fear. Felhound is good against casters.

Well, look - I can't tell you everything, or my fingers will fall off. And don't be intimidated. Just start going into BGs. Do your best. DoT and fear.

In wsg your team needs to get their flag and bring it to your flag room. In your first wsg spend time "getting" the layout of hte bases (both are hte same floorplan) - where do the ramps and steps go - etc - there are 3 lvls. Tun means the tunnel, gy means the graveyard, ramp is hte ramp opposite gy - people call these out when flag gets stolen, to tell defenders where to find the fc (flag carrier). You can't score if the enemy has stolen your flag - when you kill an enemy fc rt click the flag that he drops to send it back to your base.

AB is complex - you click flags at 5 different nodes - and you get points for hte ones your side controls. First team to 2000 wins.

AV - just do what everyone else does. Way too hard to explain.

Eye of the Storm - you need to be 60s.

Just get in there and try. GL!
