As a rule I don't give a damn about what some jackass in wow says. Unless they pay my account each month they don't have a word to say about what I should specc as.

most don't care what you spec.
They do care what you spec when they're relying on you in an instance.

Speaking from recent experience here.

Used to be a 5/36/20 hybrid - mostly dual wield fury talents and a decent blue set tanking kit. With this spec I tanked all the lev 70 instances on non-heroic no problems (once i knew the right tactics) and even MT'd a couple of bosses in Kara.

But being brutal the heroic instances can be really nasty and going 5/5/51 has made a huge difference to my aggro generation and base stats. Holding aggro from epic kitted rogues and mage dps is the name of the game and whilst I still think I could do the job in my old spec... it makes life an aweful lot easier for them and me with my new one.

i have a 70 prot warr and know a bit about tanking.. have started a gnomie fury warr for the extra challenge now. much funnier to lv whith this one, and as i didnt know squat about how to play my warr the first time, much smoother.

if anyone should tell me they didnt want me because im fury with this one.. i guess i would laugh a bit for myself and continue questing. they wouldnt know what they just did..

I guess with all the hype about fury warriors, it's a little difficult to really justify much except in game with your own skill. Play how you like to and have fun. But don't be offended if someone just doesn't like to take a chance on you. I've played the game for 1 year 4 months but in the end it comes down to

If you don't know the guy, do you really want to take the chance he's a decent tank/healer without the extra bonuses to tank/heal from talents?

if you know the person you'd probabally know if he suited your needs and act accordingly however not everyon wants to take a risk especially with the number of horror stories about pugs you hear out there.

ps. for the guy who said oh you only need to ask the group to stand back while you pop your sunders... I think you need to take off your blinders and read the tooltips on revenge, shield bash, and other fun stuff. Stop thinking about yourself as fury warrior and think about yourself as a WARRIOR.

I know a few fury/arms warriros who tank better than the crappy protection warriors I've met and vice versa. Protection means it's easier to tank. however the tools are already there for those who know how to use them without dipping into the talents.

Right now I'm 4/45/3 (lvl 61) and plan on putting the rest of my points earned into Prot. Tanking hasn't been a problem yet so if they pass me up I just blow them off and look for a new group. Has worked out so far.

You really don't need to be full prot before heroics. I'm currently specced 8/35/18 and have tanked Steamvaults, Shadowlabs and Shattered Halls without trouble. Also I've tanked Shattered Halls with full fury build, so it really isn't that necessary to be full prot. And my gear is greens and blues.

I've only been asked once or twice if I'm prot, I quess it might depend on the realm whether the group makes this an issue or not.

On my hunter I am usually group leader, and I ask Warriors what spec they are only for purpose of if they are hard hitters or if they are damage takers. that gives our healer an idea of what s/he is getting ready for. also ask my druids/shamans thier spec. cause i havent found an enhanc shaman (who didnt have healing gear mind you) heal for anything. Only reason I ask is to better cordinate the group. If I have a shadow priest as main healer. I am gonna ask my feral druid or ehancement shaman to help him out a bit if we have a fury warrior vs a prot. as for rogues/locks/mages I could care less what spec they are. being that my main is a hunter I know my spec :) so im not worried about the hunters either :P But I have never turned down a fury warrior or arms warrior the roll of tank in my party.

Excuse me, but i really doubt you've tanked shattered halls with full fury and greens.

I've seen both Fury and Arms warriors tank SH. It's not that hard if you have the skill. I've also seen Prot warriors be the cause for wipes in zones below their level.

In the end, RPZip said it best.

Tanking: Skill > Gear > Spec, but sometimes you just need all three. *shrug*
