Why dont priests heal pets...Follow

#27 May 08 2007 at 12:52 PM Rating: Decent
here's 20 items what I like to remind new priests.

1. Heal pets during battles (just pop a renew or something) to reduce the downtime of the pet dying. However, do this only if there's noone else who's in danger of dying and your mana situation is ok. (dps pets)

2. Res pets after battles to reduce the hunter downtime from needing to res and drink. (and waiting for the hunter to finish drinking to fill up his 75% of total mana res.)

3. Heal Tank/offtank pets whenever necessary. In the hands of an experienced hunter, they tank better than fury warriors in dual wield. (and keep the mob/s off you better)

4. Affliction warlocks are masoists. They don't care if they have 50% or so life so long as they have full mana before battle. Remember to pop a renew on them right before the battle starts and you can generally ignore him/her unless they look to dip below 30% life or pulled all the mobs off a noob tank. Chances are he/she will be at 80% + life by the end of the battle. (before lifetap)

5. Don't bother with healing the pet if the hunter/rogue did a bad pull. Just run out of range so you don't get sucked into combat. You can always res the pet later

6. The hunter has fake death. you don't. rogues have something similar.

7. Heal to keep people alive not to 100% life. who cares how much life the characters have at the end of combat so long as everyone LIVES.

8. If you think you can get away with it(ie with good or excellent tank/s). pop enough renews, g/heals, shields and other to keep everyone alive and above the danger level of 24-30%. Then use your wand to help mow down the last few mobs.
Clearing the mobs faster means you need to heal less, and the downtime betwen mobs is less. don't use too much mana for this as accidents do happen)

9. You're a priest not a nursemaid. (re 7)

10. If someone/thing dies and you're sitting at 30% + mana at the end of battle, It's ok so long as it's not one of your party members. However if it's one of your party members. (including pets) you need to improve your healing tactics. (the polite way of saying L2P)

11. if you're constantly oom and you started battles with full mana. go through this checklist.
a. Stop using shield + flash heal. use renew and normal heals.
b. Stop wasting your mana on dps.
c. Is your gear up to date?
d. Did you remember to learn your spells for your level?
e. Are you in the right instance? or close enough with good gear that it makes little difference?

12. If the only one in your group that dies is you, remember these words.
Bite me once, it was an accident. Bite me twice, see ya. (unless they are rich @#$@ and are paying you g to stay in the group or beg and plead and finaly get a decent tank /squishy guard to take over from the idiot who keeps letting the mob through.)

13. If you've a hunter guard, RUN AWAY from him so he can use distract and his aggro moves to pull the mob off you.(or run over his ice trap) for all others run towards them when you've adds on your butt.

14. You also have the option of running towards a clear area then popping scream. Just remember that screamed targets will run up to 50' away from you. it's a circle with you in the center. keep that 50' circle from getting anywhere close to another group of adds if you choose to use it. if you move, the circle will move too so just remember that.

15. Remember early renew = 1 second spell so the 5 second rule of mana regen works in your favour. last minute button mashing of shield+ flash = oom priest.

16. Anticipate when your heals (and what level of heals) are needed. it's ok to come out short on healing so long as item 7 is followed.

17. on the subject of preparation, you can estimate the amt of life your party member has when you heal him/her/it with a low level heal in between combats. That will prevent you from coming up too short in healing and wasting your time to cast yet another spell.

18. Mana = life. don't waste mana.

19. A good tank and squishy guard is worth putting in your friend list. keep a list of them so you can use them for item 12.

20. Remember, in team, me is spelt backwards so work together and learn the strengths and limitations of the other classes. (it also helps you kill them better in pvp)

I have a 25 newb priest and I usually quest with a warrior and a hunter in my guild. I know pets are important as both off-tanks and CC. I try to keep an eye on the pet's health bar, but I agree that actual players are more important. If I only have the mana for one more heal, and I have to choose between the pet and the warrior, then I'll choose the warrior, but, again, I try to keep pets alive if possible.

I try to look at it this way: if the pet dies, we loose one member of the group. If the hunter dies, then we loose two members. Pets are important, but sometimes sacrifices must be made.

I usually heal the pet's to keep them alive. Even when it's not off-tanking or tanking, as long as i got the mana and the time to cast it for without endangering anyone of the group.

Yes i've let pets die more then once, why? Because the main tank is my first priority. If the tank falls away, the chance of a whipe is increasing alot.

I rather sacrifice a pet so i can keep the tank healed with my remaining mana then to have a living pet and me being OOM and a dead tank..

I like the line from a few posts before, 'Heal to keep people alive' << 100% true.

I try to heal pet as much as i can because they keep mobs off me, but when the warrior is too low lvl or his gear is bad sometimes all the healing goes to him obviously.
Yesterday in the inst pet was better than the tank:D

I play a hunter and as MM spec I think of the pet as expendable. I sometimes dont bother brining him out due to such easy death(Will most likely change this with new patchs avoidence and added DPS from KC taken off the GCD). I have been in instances when the healer heals the pets and I along with other hunters I have seen usally give them great praise! Cmon healers you must have got some hunter all giddy by throwing a heal on there pet at some time?

my healing priority:
Tank
Off-tank (this can be a pet)
Me
Off-healer
DPS
Hunters
Rogues
DPS pets

if your pet is keeping me from harm, he's worth healing. you (with feign death) and any rogue (because they're all retards) are low priorities.
