Ok this might seem like kind of a ***** and not really anything to do with the class. but I am thinking of lvling a priest and was wondering. Why is it that every time I have a priest in my group they never heal my pet. specially when they are expecting me to tank due to a lack of shaman or warrior/pali. So as soon as my pet dies... cause she just has taunted 10 mobs and holding fairly well, but my simple heal doesnt do **** for that kind of damage absorbsion. then... look 8 mobs that survived the fight with my pet is barroling my way with a vengence... so then i stand my ground... priest with over half mana left. and low and behold... no bubble to help or anything just a renew... wtf guys. a lil lovin for the pet will go a long way in keeping us alive!
oh btw its usually cause some rogue didnt have improved sap and sapped 1 guy in a group of 5 or more... then he trys to run... and grabs a nother group of 3 or so.
If the pet is expected to tank, or off-tank, I will keep an eye out for the pet. If your healer didn't keep a pet up with the expectation that it will tank, that healer failed to do their job.
Otherwise, my tank gets priority heals, and if I have mana/time, I will throw a renew on a pet.

If your pet was tanking and it didn't get healed, then the priest screwed up. If your pet was DPSing, and decided to sit in an AOE, and act like a stupid AI script with no human controller, I don't give a damn, and will happily watch the stupid thing die.
Basically, if your pet is not tanking, and it dies, don't ***** to the healer, they probably knew and didn't care. If and only if, the pet is tanking AND there's a wipe where the pet never got any heals, there's a problem with the healer.

Yeah I always try to keep pets up, even imps, although that doesn't usually work out too well hehe. I think pets are important part of the group..in many cases I can see if the pet dies , those mobs on him will go straight for me. I mean if its a crazy pull and everyones taking dmg, sometimes the pets die, but I always apologize, and try to rez em.
Pets are expendable.
If it's a choice between a player and a pet, and the pet is not doing something to hold the group together, I will choose to let the pet die.
I won't heal pets if, say, the hunter forgot to turn Growl off and the stupid thing pulls off of the real tank. I won't heal pets if I'm crunched for time. I especially won't heal pets if it's a low armor/HP pet the hunter brought out for extra damage.
Those circumstances notwithstanding, I'll heal pets. But pets are expendable.

Perhaps telling the Priest about the pet would have helped. I beleive that displaying pet health is an option that isn't enabled by default. You could also ask for a Shield on it. This way, the priest knows that the pet is a valuable tank, rather than another loose aggro magnet. Don't assume that the priest automatically will be keeping an eye on it. Communication is important.
Oh and by the way... if you're a hunter, you can Mend Pet. So frankly, I blame you. Only way this is remotely plausable as 'blame the healer' is if it was a Felguard (those are almost like having another tank, they deserve to be kept upright).
Mend pet is too weak to keep a pet alive. It's like a renew, but has to be channeled. So you lose one dps for almost no gain. And Felguard dies too easy to be good as tank.
Honestly, most priests don't care about pets. The pet's icon is small, so hard to see. But that doesn't mean that we should forget about them. I know a hunter that can keep 3 mobs alone (in shattered halls - 2 traps and kite/kill one).

If your pet is between me and a mob I will heal him. Otherwise, I'll wait for the battle to end and /mourn battlekitty. The bar is just so small to notice in an intense fight with multiple real players getting hit that it may be too late by the time we think to check the pet.
But, like others have said, if the pet is tanking we damn well better heal it or we are the first people they come after when they die.

Oh no, mend pet is too weak to keep the pet alive! Well maybe our heals are too weak to keep the pet alive too, because its a bloody dps pet smacking away at a mob.
As for keeping them alive, I'll toss them renews, and I always know when they die, but I rarely care.

Interesting posts and as a hunter main I appreaciate the kitty lovin. My bird was tanking slave pens(I know not highend instance but still) only because we had a nub for a warrior who couldnt hold aggro to save his life. The priest for the first time in my wow career healed my pet and we did execptionaly well. I was able to manage aggro sooo much better for the group this way.
Side note if a warrior cannot keep up with growl he shoudnt be a warrior. I keep growl on simply because if anything happens to the tank my pet is there to pick the mob right back up its a real pita without it on the whole time.
So yea if you have two tanks and the pet is there for dps the hunter/lock should know better than to let there pet get aggro and its not the priests job to heal it.

Oh i know.... if you read the post above. I had to main tank... which once my pet died... i got everyone on me... got killed and all the clothies after that... i said... wtf wheres the love for my pet. he said... oops. did it 2 more times i left group.
i was once in a strat living group at 60, and I was wondering why no one was taking damage. Not even the tank. Then the hunter goes: "man.. the pet is tanking.." Hihi, "ooops". Then i healed it and all went ok.
I guess this person in specific was a [priest]tard then. i know we got them in all classes. and yes i got a lot of lowbie chars :P I get bored easy.
If the pet is a tank pet and clearly doing some usefull offtanking, i will heal the pet. If its a cat or a wolf id rather throw on a inner fire and do the tanking myself :P
When I'm on my hunter I usually tell the Healer to ignore my pet and save their mana for the warrior/tank. I have pet healing and in the next patch they are changing how we cast heal on our pets. It will now be an instant cast that heals them over time so we can continue shooting instead of crossing our hands and casting it.
Sweet its about time. I hate losing all my Ranged DPS just to keep my pet alive back when I was running BFD. stupid hydra -_-
Healing pets is all about situational healing... As stated before a healers job is to keep the main tank(s) alive first and foremost. Plus we are helping our fellow teammates by reducing their repair bill. With that being said, I have been thanked time and time again for healing pets as regardless they end up holding aggro of at least one mob as a dps pet, or multiple mobs as a tanking pet.
If the pet is getting hit, then that means that I am not. I enjoy that fact. For Warlock pets, I get to keep my locks with tons of mana by throwing renews on them so they can drain tank their pets. However, I do prefer a warlock using a void walker as they can take lots of damage and last way longer than a fel guard.
Bottomline, is explain to your healer why it is good to heal their pets as lots of healers do not realise how valuable they can be.
At the same time, as a hunter or lock, be prepared for your pet to die occasionally as the group is more important than the pet 90% of the time.

All of the priests I have been with have healed my pet really well. Not even with just renews but full out heals and I always thank them. The healer would sometimes tell me if they wouldn't be able to heal my pet during a certain fight due to the need to concentrate on the tank which was always fine by me. I don't mind letting my cat die from time to time because I'm not about to sit there during a big fight and channel mend pet over and over just to keep it alive. Yes it does do a bit of damage but with me being MM I can live without the pet for a few minutes. If the pet is just going to die within 2 seconds anyway I will just keep it by my side so I can keep the extra 2% damage for having him out and that way he will be fine once the fight is over. Of course with the next patch and the changes to mend pet that they are doing I will have no problem throwing a heal to my pet since it will only interrupt my damage for a moment. Don't know if that was mentioned as I didn't read some of the last posts...I'm only on the priesty forums looking for a bit of info on a possible new char and need to resume my search =P

For me its always that, I don't mind healing the pet as long as it looks like the heal won't risk the group in a heavy pull. But the majority of the time I will still even toss a renew or flash heal once on the pet even then.
As far as the pet off tanking, yeah a healer should definetly toss heals to the pet if they are being expected to tank. Maybe in the case where the pet picks something up unexpectedly then yeah, I can understand a priest missing it if its focusing on the group. But otherwise there should be heals on the pet.
Having a hunter myself I've gone through that same problem where my pet was expected to off tank and just got completely ignored. But healers that just blantly ignore the pet in a situation like that should get beaten with a log for not paying enough attention :P

I didn't read the whole thread, but the first couple of posts I got the gist of it. I am a 70 hunter, my first char, and never once did I expect someone else to heal my pet. I always believed the pet was the hunter's resposibility, unless it is off tanking then yes, healer should try to help pet when possible but main tank/other group members come first.
