Even though "melee hunters" are scoffed upon, hunters DO have a few melee skill which they could make use of at the proper times. The problem most new hunters have is when they cannot identify what the proper times are, and overmelee. Such times include:
-In a dungeon/building where it is impossible to get to 8+ yards without aggroing other mobs (either by running past your target into a group or there's a group behind, and you can't get LOS on the sides). However, instead of resorting to melee through the whole dungeon, tell your group to move the fight to a location where you can range.
-When levelling a lowb pet, where there is a significant difference in level, meleeing greens is one way to level your pet. (Right now I'm levelling a tallstrider from level 9 on my level 27 hunter alt, it has about 40% my health, so I make the better tank right now). Another option is to kite mobs, but if you can solo them melee it might be a bit easier.
-In PvP and/or kiting, jousting can be a necessity. However this isn't meleeing, just making use of melee skills to deal a bit of damage and get back to range.
-In a group, especially lowb groups but sometimes in higher ones, your tank will be an idiot. Sometimes you may need to use distracting shot or so to pull a mob off a healer. While hunters shouldn't melee, it's a hell of a lot better for you to be meleeing than the priest (for the time being, sacrifice DPS or sacrifice heals? In the long run, sacrifice a DD or sacrifice the rez?). However, at 70 you can use misdirection to pull back to the tank, and you have your pet and traps, so this is worst-case scenario.
-If rooted, and the mob is within melee range, why not hit it?
-If you are low on arrows you may need to melee. However, you shouldn't get low on arrows if you pay attention, so this one shouldn't count. Meleeing IS better than using eyes of the beast to fight (should be common sense, but I've had to tell some hunters that).
-Before you get a pet, you may melee all you want.
Note that a lot of these are all situational, most of them either are the result of a mistake or should be avoided, and they also dry up later on as groups get more experienced and dungeons get harder.
Reason I'm posting this is just out of curiosity, if anyone has anything to add to the list or any comments on those already on the list.
EDIT: Also, when levelling up weapon skills so wing clip doesn't miss.
