It seems to me that the moonkin form, although having insane armor, is a terrible form to solo in. This is mainly because that you cannot heal, so if someone is attacking you, you must revert to humanoid, slap on some HoTs, then either go back into moonkin or fight in humanoid.

Unless you can come up with enough DPS to kill the enemy before he kills you, which is very hard as Balance Druids most powerful aspect is that they can outlast an enemy through HoTs and Moonfire.

I know moonkin is amazing when coupled with other spellcasters in a party, but if you're taking all the hits and nobody is healing you, the moonkin goes down quickly.

Does anyone else notice this?

Not really. The Moonkin you're playing with, or the Moonkin that you are, is either undergeared or not playing to his fullest.

Following that logic all Druids suck except for Resto Tree of Life Druids who can heal themselves without shifting. Cat, Bear and Moonkin must all return to caster to heal.

Moonkin can nuke the hell outta mobs better than you seem to imply. Moonkin kinda used to be an "outlasting" form but with the new regen talents Balance Druids can go a bit more all out on a mob without going OoM all the time. And no, Moonfire spam is not viable and most Druid will not use that. -_-

I'd suggest looking up the Druids you mention on the Armory and check their equipment and spec. Moonkin is a force to be reckoned with.

As a former moonkin,I rarely had to heal myself during a fight (since they were dead before they got to me :D ) ...But if i did,it was simply a matter of -> root, change, heal, back to moonkin, finish mob(s).

Half the time i didnt even bother changing into moonkin, since i got hit so seldom...

Allthough with +750 dmg I could put out some serious hurting :D

Wha wha wha?
Maybe their is a huge diffrence between the Moonkin You are playing and the one I am. I hit hard, dang hard, so much so that had you made a video of my DPS and showed it to me 2 years ago i would have been convinced you were on a pirate server cheating. Ok so Ballance spec did kind of blow in those days(when the top of the tree was hurricane), but we still had a way to make it work, even without moonkin. We called it Root & Nuke,ya know, it still works today. so even with staying moonkin it is eazy to take out targets.

For example, get a target, start starfire, cast ER, move to new distance, recast starfire, moonfire, maybe one last starfire and.... you get it.

Thats not our only trick, but it is one. Besides who cares about a few melee hits, i got huge piles o armor.

I played moonkin for many levels and although I could usually kill something before it did much dmg to me if it DID do dmg, half the time I wouldn't bother shifting to caster to heal, instead I would just bandage up in moonkin form.

Seeing as moonkin rely almost entirely on mana for dmg I never wanted to waste the mana on the shift BACK to moonkin form. Shift out, cast a 845 mana regrowth and then shift back for another 663 mana (without shifting reducing talents). That's another 4 starfires! (The mana calcs are based off level 70 spells)

Since moonkin can drink potions in forms AND bandage I went that route for healing. (Unless I was out of combat, and high on mana)

Although, once you get your crit rating up high enough you'll have those wonderful fights where you cast starfire, crit stunning them long enough to cast another starfire which crits, allowing you to cast another which kills em. I can't tell ya how much fun that is.

As far as soloing goes, Moonkin is like bear with high damage. (Just no threat bonus luckily). As long as the Moonkin sticks to leather gear, they have a lot more armor than anybody but perhaps plate wearers & bear druids. So unlike many classes (mages, rogues etc.), they can actually drop out for a heal.

I'm going to have to go along with the general consensus that the Moonkin you're basing your observations on is a terrible one. That, or your observations are flawed. Actually, what are you basing these observations on?

I'm a Moonkin. Killing things is not a problem at all, nor do I find myself ever "going down quickly" unless I'm fighting spell-casting mobs that ignore my armor. It's true I have to shift out if I want to heal, but... so do Feral Druids. It's not that big of a deal at all. The only problem I've ever had is running OOM too fast or too often.

Or use bandages in Moonkin form.

I can only agree with all of the above. As a moonkin you are considerd a humanoid, so you can pop a potion, eat, drink, even bandage yourself. Why on earth would you want to waste mana on shifting? BURN IT ON THE MOBS!

I pull with starfire, root, IS, MF and then wrath the mob down. This will decimate them in no time! They will never raech me, if i pull 2 or more, well we have CC in the form of sleep (beasts/dragons), root, cyclone..... the only concern you have is your mana.........

People burning down Moonkin, have to (im sorry for doing this) l2p :P
