Raptor RaptureFollow

Hello All,

I recently rolled a Orc hunter and am finding a lot of these posts about pet selection a bit confusing. After consulting Petopia I chose a Raptor (a nice red one called Alan) as my pet believing the relatively small minus in Health was more than compensated for by a big plus in the damage stakes.

So far things seem to be going well. I can take out up to two +1's or a single +3 and have picked up additional stamina and armour talents for my pet to overcome his short commings.

Given the frequency of Raptors in the low level areas and IMHO, their kick-******** why are there so few posts about them? Are they unpopular and if so, why?

The main drawback of a Raptor is that they are slow. They need to have dash and they would totally rock! The most compliments I ever got on my pet was when I had the Daggermaw Blackhide from Blade's Edge Mountains. With those glowing eyes, dark skin and bluish throat, it just looks too cool!

Come on Blizz, give them dash !!!

Thanks Argize. Is this mainly a PvP problem or does it affect PvE too? How big a problem is it?

Of course in PvP the hinderance is big time bothersome. What good is your pet if the enemy can see it coming and escape its' attack. And chasing a flag runner, lol. As far as the PVE, the slower your pet's attack the longer it take for the kill, thus the slower your leveling. In some situations when fighting multiple enemies, one will stray away and aggro more. Being able to intercept them before this happens can save you a visit to the graveyard as well.

As the levels get higher, leveling becomes slower. Personally I need dash, dive, or charge or I'd go crazy, lol.

There are a lot of pets that do not get dash/dive. In my opinion every pet should be able to learn a faster chase speed. Boars have charge and Warp Stalkers have warp. Such abilities are very popular and any pet without one is instantly considered a second class pet.

That having been said, pets without such speed enhancements work perfectly well in PvE. One of my hunters leveled from 19 to 61 with an albino crocalisk. I’d send him in to attack and then shoot the mob. They would meet half way and the killing would commence. One of my hunters has two spiders for her pets. You can certainly get by with “slow” pets. But I do admit that I miss dash when I have a pet without it.

In my opinion the most important feature of any pet is how much you enjoy having it at your side. A pet you enjoy without dash is a much better pet than one you don’t enjoy that can learn dash.

And just FYI, pets can’t learn dash until they are in their low 30s. So until then even those pets are slow. If you spend points in the beast mastery tree you can lean Bestial Swiftness (just one point) which will increase a pet’s outdoor movement by 30%. It’s not as good as dash, but it’s a noticeable increase.

Between level 10 and 30, boars still get charge. As much as I hate to say it, below level 30 boars are the only "first-class" pet. For me, unless a pet has a special ability which overpowers the lack of dash/dive (i.e. scorpid poison), I won't choose the pet with it. Raptors and cats I believe are the exact same stat-wise, and raptors can learn growl, bite, and claw, but cats can learn those plus dash and prowl.

If you like the look of the raptor, go with it. But if you don't care, a cat would be a better choice simply because it has more abilities available (and you can simply turn them off if you don't want to waste focus).

Same thing as the wolf/hyena post somewhere in here.

Basically what was already said. It seems to me that if you're an orc hunter, with +5% pet damage, then a high-damage pet like a raptor or cat (or ravager/windserpent/owl/carrion bird) would be even more worthwhile.

SK! Well, what a relief! Was wondering when you were gonna break... JK JK JK!

All kidding aside, it's true. One can easily get addicted to the boar's speed. It's handy, especially in pvp but also in pve.

The faster your pet gets to mob, the faster you can amp up your dps (with relative safety). Especially if you're MM, you don't want to be waiting for pet to hit target. Even if it's only a few seconds a fight, it's a few seconds times possibly many thousands of fights. It may be more psychological than "real," but I like the boar's speed even in pve.

That said, Sk is right in pointing out that sometimes you can accept a slow pet if their other specials are good enough.

I've been reading how scorpions are hot arena pets among many hunters because of the poison - not just poison - but poison that stacks.

Animal, your raptor will do fine. What I'd do is put him in the stables and tame a scorp in durotar - and hunt stuff the scorp's lvl. See what you think. Then get a durotar boar and again hunt stuff his level. See what you think. Alan will be waiting for you in the stables (an npc in front of most inns in small towns or w/ hunter trainer in big cities). Try stuff out. You can best learn by doing. GL!

TY for all the responses guys.

I will definately stable Alan for a bit and experiment. A cat doesn't seem "Orc-y" enough so I will definately try a Boar and a Wolf. Ideally I would like one pet of each type DPS, tank and balanced .

For RP purposes, a wolf would be great for an orc (since wargs and orcs go together not only in wow, but in mythology in general - they rode them in LotR, didn't they?)

And ipon, I still refuse to get a boar. What I meant by that was that since boars have the only movement skill pre-30, and having a movement skill makes it a "first-class" pet, that by that statement pre-30 a boar is first-class. On my hunter I just made I got a ravager, switched over to a wind serpent so it could get aggro quicker, tried a wolf out (realized it was a smaller radius on FH than I thought) and now I'm on a tallstrider. Why? Because for now I don't have BD/GFtT (and wont get those until the high levels) and bite, dash, and growl will be all I really need.
