From the Pally forums - I was about to answer there on the hunter part, then tell him to seek the advice of smarter people here too. Then decided to check for a thread here first. I love when people are smart.

These are the skill builds I made for the both of us, he thinks it sounds alright, what do you guys think?

Improved Revive Pet seems like a waste, as you're probably not going to be reviving your pet mid-battle, and can always drink afterwards. Also, the pally is probably better at rezzing poor Fido/Bacon/whatever better anyways.
Get Focused Fire instead.
I like Rapid Killing(MM) instead of Imp. AotHawk because then I don't have to keep Hawk up and I can get the bonus when I need it. On the downside, Rapid Fire does take mana, so... Also, you can still use Rapid Fire without that skill, it just has a longer cooldown and no killing blow bonus.
For the other Marks tree talents, skip Imp. Concussive Shot for pve, as it's really more of a pvp talent. Improved Hunter's Mark will help your pet, as well as Go for the Throat. Or switch Imp. Hunter's Mark out for Efficiency if you run into mana problems later on. Aimed shot isn't terribly useful except as a big opener due to its long cast ... I mean aiming ... time. If you're deeper into mm/have a bunch of +crit/+damage gear and it critical strikes, you can get very high numbers, that's far enough in the future that you can respec then for it if you want to.
You might also want to drop/wait on the survival Slayer talents - they're nice, but only work in some situations, and you could probably get more benefit from some of the deeper BM talents instead.
Here's a vague throw at what you might want to consider:

Note that I took out the points in Pathfinding since they get outdated when you get your mount and can spec into Animal Handler.
Note that I took out Animal Handler as it does not stack (gain any benefit from combination) with gear-based +mount speed effects like
Mithril Spurs or a
Carrot on a Stick. There's also a glove enchant. You can install the Spurs on some boots (not necessarily the ones you prefer to wear in combat) and better spend the 2 points elsewhere. Your pally friend will eventually get a self-buff that increases his mounted speed too.
here are a few links you might want to check out

Any of the more experienced scholars and/or gentlemen here have anything to add?
