This is my current shopping basket, it's grown a few hundred bucks since I started planning it.

Later this year there will be a second GTX 770 and another set of ram added for the overkill.

So right now I'm torn between my CPU, my GPU, and my PSU.

So, essentially, square one.

What are your specs again?

I forget, but there's an i7-4771 and GTX 770 in there, plus 16 gigs of RAM. The stuff that cost a lot of money, aside from the processor and video card, was the 500 GB SSD. In hindsight, I could have settled for the 250 GB one since all my games are installed on the secondary disk.

Also, I couldn't imagine myself ever being in a position to drop $2k on a rig, no matter how much I wanted it.

Half a month's paycheck for me at the time. I'm single and have very few living expenses. Not gonna lie, I had to consider it for a moment, but if there ever was a time to blow money, it was then..

Ignite Munching is a good example. Their "fix" for it was to just strip down the system to a much simpler form, because it just wasn't possible to solve the dot-related mechanic causing the proc eating in the first place.

And while it's possible this is no longer the case (I didn't try Frost in MoP), Shatter was ALWAYS based around a systems bug allowing Mages to sneak in additional crits. Except that Blizzard refused to acknowledge that this bug was the foundation of the entire damn play style.

Arcane is the only spec that didn't have systems bugs with it (excepting some really awkward haste/gcd interactions in Wrath). And so their response was to turn around and give Arcane the worst master in the game (IHATEITIHATEITIHATEIIHATEITIHATEIT).

I like the initial part. Actually trying to target a specific budget limit is less fun, because you inevitably see some really great part/deal that puts you like $20 over, so naturally you want it...

See, this is why my desktop is nearly five years old, dead as a doornail, and I'm gaming on my laptop. I go over my budget each time and think, "I'll wait a few months and prices will come down, and my budget will increase." But then my daughter.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't want to go back to that game. WoW just seems to attract a class of individual you don't see as much of in the other MMOs. Did he just grab whatever items he had to reach the ilvl threshold or something?

Meh, whatever I suppose. Best of luck not nerd raging and such. Smiley: thumbsup

Maybe you're just so bad at the other games that the reason you don't see any of those hopeless cases is because they're barely worse than you are. Smiley: tongue

Because I'm not above whoring myself out, if any redditors here could 1-up this, it would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone has opinions on upgrading from a 760 to a 770 at the expense of the sturdier case (among other things)...

In other news, my desk chair broke... I wasn't even sitting in it... Doesn't that violate the first law of thermodynamics or something?

Now I need to decide if I'm factoring the cost of a chair into my build, or if I'm eating that as an additional cost... Thankfully I'm not demanding.

I now own a new desk chair.

It is more comfortable than my last desk chair (gotta love clearance sales).

Also, until you all stop being boring, this thread is now a personal blog.

It is. Smiley: lol

The hardest part is trying to make these decisions without having real data to go off of. Do I need a quad core? I know I don't need a quad core right now, but will that be a huge deciding factor in two years? Will getting the quad core now give me another year before I have to upgrade, or will it be more like two years? And will the performance difference in the meantime be noticeable?

And then we have GPUs... You can pretty much always drop another $40 to get better frame rates at higher settings. So where do you decide what the good enough point is? And then what do you decide about CPU cost vs. GPU cost?

Here is the build that's probably more than I should be spending.

Drop the GPU down. About $90 less.

Drop to a dual core from quad (still have 2 non-physical cores with hyperthreading). $60 less than that one.

I could drop another $30-50 by going for the R9 270 from the Nvidia card.

mmo champ used to have builds every couple of months, they were good for looking at the different options and figuring out what could be combined with what.

Lifehacker made one a little bit ago. I find the biggest issue, though, is that prices can fluctuate quite a bit. So when you look up their parts list, it could be $100+ more.

As of right now, I'm debating between these two cases:

NZXT
Rosewill

I prefer the NZXT, I think, but I still made a thread on Reddit for input there, since they're all pretty big on using the cheapest cases you can get.

I'd go more than $10 over budget just to avoid that Rosewill case. It's got that typical badly designed flashy "game PC" look and I personally think that shouldn't ever be seen outside of a teenagers bedroom.

Is a 650W supply enough for all that?

650W is enough for a whole lot of computer. At least as long as you don't use an AMD cpu.

Whatever way you look at it, there's nothing wrong with the build even if it's not everything you'd have wanted in there. Should run almost all current games well (if not with all settings maxed at high fps).

Honestly, the biggest problem is that the only game I particularly care about is Dragon Age Inquisition, and the specs aren't out yet.

My Steam library is so full of games I never played because my PC didn't play them quite as well as I wanted it to... So I'll be going through a backlog for some time anyway. The fact that I have literally no clue what else is coming out this year besides DAI certainly helps.

And let's be honest, the first things I'm going to do are:

1. Replay ME/DA, because I have an addiction.
2. Load up WoW, just to glory in how pretty it is, since it's easily my best point of comparison in all of gaming. Smiley: lol
3. +1
