Grats Maz!

And I'm reserving all judgement until I actually play the game. I don't want to form any expectations and then judge it off of them. Unfortunately, calling itself ESO means that certain things automatically comes to mind. Regardless of trying to reserve judgement, I'll be disappointed if it's not open-world, if it doesn't have an open-ended character development system, and if I can't pick up an absurd number of useless items around the game.

I know I've seen aspects of the above, so I can go into it with an open mind.

The one thing I will say is that I'm happy it's coming to the PS4, too. I'm of the opinion that MMOs should probably be looking to expand their platforms with the current market system. Not that I consider this universal - some games would not work well on a console - but it's a trend I'm happy about.

I don't really care, I'll play in 3rd person mode anyway. But seriously, any thoughts on the game beyond first person view?
I'm certainly going to give it a try whenever it goes free-to-play. Failing that, I'll give it a year or so at least and see how it pans out. There's a lot of potential there, but the bar is pretty high for them as well. I fear this will be another MMO that turns out to be pretty decent but never lives up to the hype and the fans expectations. Something akin to SWTOR.

As for the "realism" that's Elder Scrolls in general. It's never been cartoony, and goes for that realistic dark-medieval kind of appearance.

As for the first person, is that going to be required? In skyrim I found myself swapping between 1st and 3rd with some frequency. It was obviously easier to see what was going on around you in 3rd person, but I found it harder to aim a bow or spell accurately. One of those things I'd often be in 1st person at range and 3rd person during melee. I'll be interested to see how it all plays out.

Nothing was really stopping you from calling yourself a teacher before the exams, though. The only difference is now people might have to pay you for it.

Congratulations.

Congrats Maz. Good Luck and don't get frustrated. It can be a very rewarding profession.

No sense wasting words when digg has said it all. Nothing beats traipsing along a watercourse grabbing butterflies and shooting crabs.

I too am hoping it won't turn out to be another SWTOR.

EDIT: because fingers aren't strong enough.

Yeah, if butterfly catching isn't something I'll accidentally spend 50% of my game time doing, I will not be satisfied.

It's fun times when your goal when you log in is to catch as many butterflies as possible so you'll have potions for your next dungeon crawl.

No no no no no, you misunderstand.

I want to log in with the intention of raiding the biggest, baddest boss in the game, but accidentally end up chasing butterflies and running away from bears instead.

It's just not an ES game otherwise.

So Aeth, discussion in the General Game forum suggest ESO is going to be PVP-centric.

Yeah, I'm trying really, REALLY hard to not let that bias me. But the lack of player housing isn't helping either. If I'm not supposed to be saving up for the biggest mansion I can find, what's the point???

I'll probably just continue trying to ignore the game until its popular enough that it's unavoidable.

I really don't give a flying **** about player housing, I care about good PvE and in the past few years PvP centric MMO seems to mean mass PvP and there is nothing dumber than mass PvP.

I feel like largescale PVP could be interesting, if there was any actual way to direct people and it wasn't just everyone running amok. What that would mean in practice, I don't know. The only thing I can imagine is restricting whatever points the system uses specifically to their ability to fulfill the objective of their group, with the bulk of earned points coming from victory? Plus access to real direction tools by the group leader?

Since they're already going to have rank systems, automatically place the highest-ranked characters in the zone at the match start into those roles, have them select their group objectives, and go from there?

I imagine it would either be an amazing system, or the worst system ever, with very little room for anything in the middle.

Say it's a cap of 40 players, 5 player groups. The 8 top-ranked players would become group leaders, and the remaining people would be shuffled those groups evenly.

Then the group leader will select some objectives, and some tactical points on the map, for the start of the match. With the ability to change them on the fly throughout the match?

If a kill isn't going to reward a player with anything, unless it's a kill in service of their objective, and those kills are insignificant compared to victory, it MIGHT work.

Might.

Well, the hope is that the highest ranked players in a match would have an understanding of PVP tactics, and actually speak to each other to decide on tactics.

Of course, if the top PVPers don't want to do the largescale PVP, that's not going to solve anything.

I don't mind the occasional million versus million stuff, but really it's just chaos. It looks so cool at first glance and quickly fades away into one big ball of fire DPS race. I'll take a 2v3 around a flag any day.

O.K. I missed that. Thanks for mentioning it. What the hell does PVP-centric mean?

I know what PvP is. The discussion makes it sound like the game will center on PvP with maybe a bit of PvE to get the PvPers leveled up. That means I mentally strike it from my list of "must do" games. So it is said, so it is done. (All hail Ramses the Great.)

But then I read a bit of this poorly written, sycophantic info and it made me curious enough to read a bit more in the "gameplay" area of that site. My hope is restored and the game is physically unstricken (I just made that word up). It sounds an awful lot like GW2 in the sense that it is a single PvP zone with three factions fighting over different objectives in large scale fights, etc. The plan is for it to mean something and have some impact on the PvE aspect, from what I can glean.

Not too horrible, as long as the "impact" is nothing too impactful. It seems that they are maybe going to have the main boss available only to the faction that controls . . . something . . . PvP-wise. If that's true, it won't last long. How long will one faction have solo access to the main boss before everyone interested in raiding the main boss switches to that faction? Maybe if they limited the amount of time the main boss could be accessed, and gave the faction that controls that something PvP-wise a little longer access time, I could see it working.

So, hopefully, the "ESO will be PvP-centric" is either a dumb rumor or the developers' way of trying to garner interest with PvP-centric types. Remember, this is no longer The Age of Aquarius. Today, lies sell and being truthful is for the hopeless and naive.

But, still, no personal housing? Whaaaa???!!?!? I was hoping to invite Maz to my place and shoot an arrow into his knee. Or sneak into Digg's place and steal his butterfly collection.

EDIT: to, too, two.
