Not wearing them can be rather painful. They usually wear them in hockey too and last weekend it was demonstrated why when a guy who wasn't wearing one got a stick to the face. He lost 7 teeth and got a broken jaw, it was very, very painful to watch.

Definitely the nastiest injury I've seen. Worse than when I was still a kid and a guy on the opposing team got a ball straight in the family jewels, although I don't know how that ended and it could very well have done permanent damage.

when i was younger and played hockey everyone wore a cup. pretty sure that they do in the pros/nationals as well.

even with a mouth guard in a stick/puck to the face will cause teeth to get messed up.
