There are also tokens that let you steal points from teams.

Torchlight is free on GOG.com in case you're the last person on Earth to not own Torchlight (and don't want to get the superior TL2)

I don;t own Torchlight, I've played a couple hundred hours of TL2 though so not really worth the effort to sign up for GOG for this.

I found out I could add a bunch of Bing Searches to my bookmarks in a separate folder and just right click "open all in tabs" to get bing searches fast.

3 Days later Bing gave me a Captcha in case I might be a bot farming searches. :)

Apparently Steam threw a monkey wrench into the scheme by making 2nd and 3rd place give 20 people 2 games and 10 people 1 game (respectively). So now the other teams aren't sitting idle and Purple is getting point-raped. (I wonder if the Team point stealing tokens are random? I think they must be...)
One of my favorite Youtubers posted a NSFW video about it that made me rethink this contest thing. Also Steam levels(not that I need more friend slots with my whopping 3 friends on my current list).

Edit: Also, the song at the end is a wee bit offensive.

It used to be a hard 250 cap (add 50 after linking FB)I think, (Xbox and PSN only allow 100 friends) and the amount of people that need more than 250(300) is pretty much internet celeb. This issue effects such a small minority of users.

The market is there to make Steam money yes, but only via providing a service that someone else would have offered on a shady trading site. It was made for trading TF2 Hats and DotA2 Items(Both which are F2P games), they added cards later, and Im going to guess 95% users in this thread have made money from farming cards, from games we got as bundle fodder.

I mean I felt his entire argument was "Steam makes money therefore its evil, but only because I have to many friends". They could have just as easily put up the sales and not given anything away for free, cards would still be sold and traded like they are now. I highly doubt that many people are buying cards just to feed points to their team.

Also if it really ment that much to him to add new friends he could just prune the 36 people on his list that haven't been on Steam in over 190 days. Steam isnt Pokemon for friends you don't need to catch them all.

He goes on to talk about paying valve for friends list increases... and still uses 15% to Valve. But users don't use summer events badges to grind levels. But non-Valve game cards, I'm almost certain 10% goes to the Developers and 5% to Valve.

And I don't get the "Throw the Jew down the well" song at the end.

Pretty sure PSN has a 2000 friend limit and XBox Live has a 1000. These were changed after PS4/XBone releases were announced.

I'm pretty sure of the opposite. The price of cards was going up in the first day or two of the sale. Then, when it became a "Everybody wins a day", the prices got softer again. Correlation/Causation and all that but it appears that the contest was driving card sales so you could get your obligatory point in and be eligible for the free games drawing. Now that they've mixed it up, I'll have to see how card prices reflect it.

I don't know what the contest story is and I guess I don't care. Maybe Reddit users drove it, maybe Valve rigged it, maybe Valve rigged it and Reddit users thinking they were driving made it even more so. For the 1:1,5000,000 chance of winning a couple free games, I can't really spent much energy worrying about it.

Point the first: It started out as you described, but the cards certainly are a naked cash grab. Not that I'm going to refrain from getting mine, mind you. Paragraph the second: I don't know that it's quite what you're saying, though that is certainly one interpretation. Most of his videos are in reaction to something. I suspect, since I've seen it a bit myself, that many are ascribing pure motives to Steam while decrying other services *cough*Origin*cough* as being vile-hearted money grubbers. I think it's fair to say that if Valve gets away with good press for farming their fanbase for money, they'll find even more ways to do it. I'm okay with that if it doesn't inconvenience me, but I'm not gonna call their motives pure or anything.

Either way, it's sort of charging people for an increased friend list. And the song was a poor choice, but he's kinda bad about looking for the least politically correct thing that he can find sometimes. I would have gone with something like Kill the Beast from Beauty and the Beast or something more about ********** the machine", but either way, I thought it got his point across. He feels that Gaben is cynically making money off of the fanbase and needs to be dealt with. I don't think it's quite that bad, but it's good to be aware of.

I've never played STALKER. I've always liked FPS games in the past, but I think that the last one I played was Resistance: Fall of Man. I've just heard good things about that one and was wondering if it lived up to the hype and if the current price was good or if it had been consistently beaten at other times.

I liked both Metro games. They are linear shooter/stealth games, very heavy in the atmosphere department, good plots and survival oriented. Stealth mechanics aren't the best but they work and the gun mechanics seemed good to me. The survival bits include things such as ammunition being used as currency in towns (Do I buy that gun upgrade or save my military grade bullets?) and gas masks/air filters being required above ground. Both games have "Good" and "Bad" style endings depending on your actions.

Both games are system-hungry in a "lolCrysis" sort of way. If you're not running a good system, you'll probably have to play on medium settings. If you're not running a top of the line system, you won't run it on ultra/max settings.

They're going to be releasing "Redux" versions of both that supposedly streamline performance and allow you to play 2033 as more "run & gun" and Last Light as more stealth. Although I liked both games, I don't have any intent on getting the Redux versions/DLC. I think game play in both is fine as designed.

Edit: Price wise, if you don't own either then it's certainly as good as it's gotten. Metro 2033 has been given out for free before as a promotion but Last Light itself has never been this cheap (plus not with the bundled DLC). Not counting the Best Buy penny-glitch.

Medium settings are more than good enough for me. I'm no huge stickler for ZOMG graphix.

That pretty much settles it for me. I need more FPS in my life anyway. As a plus, it gets cards, which is good since I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel and farming McPixel right now. Smiley: laugh

Also, I'll post this again just because it's awesome. It's a "trailer" for Last Light that was intended as more of a "setting the mood" piece than a game play trailer. The guy working on it got pulled off midway through to work on a different part of the game then came back after release and finished it himself just 'cause. Best in 1080, natch.

If STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl goes on sale, you should buy it. It's my favorite FPS for atmosphere and brutality.

Assuming you just don't have it backlogged. If you do, play it already. I highly recommend the "Complete 2009" mod (think now it's called Complete 2012).
